Karl Lagerfeld ended up with over 500 iPods because he treated them like cassette tapes
The late German faction designer Karl Lagerfeld famously owned more than 500 iPod music players from Apple, some of which are pretty rare and unique.
Lagerfeld’s home was filled with amazing items, including more than 500 iPods featuring unique decorations and bling. The designer even employed a full-time “iPod nanny,” tasked with loading each iPod with curated music.
About 300 of these iPods, along with other items, recently went up for auction on Sotheby’s website, including rare first-generation iPod nanos. Many are not in working order, with batteries needing to be changed.
The auction offers an insight into the famous designer, who passed away in 2019. More than 200 lots are included in the auction, which closes on January 31.
Karl Lagerfeld’s unique iPod collection
Graphic novelist Warren Ellis:
Lagerfeld famously had an ‘iPod nanny’ to digitize his collection for the iPods and to add new music to new devices. This is how he ended up with over 300 of them – he treated them like cassette tapes.
Ellis added that Lagerfeld also owned twenty iPads, “which he treated like sketchbooks and diaries,” as well as four iPhones. Lagerfeld couldn’t be bothered with technology: He didn’t use email and wrote letters on paper.
Apple debuted the first iPod on October 23, 2001. The standalone music player was equipped with a tiny five-gigabyte hard drive that could hold a thousand songs. It had a ten-hour battery and weighed only 6.5 ounces. Members of the press invited to Apple’s presentation woefully misunderstood the iPod’s importance, and it took some time before the music player turned into a cultural phenomenon.
iPod paved the way for Apple’s biggest hit: the iPhone. Apple officially discontinued the iPod family in May 2022. “Today, the spirit of iPod lives on,” Apple said, referring to the fact that iPhones have more music-focused features than the iPod ever did.
