TikTok starts playing videos as soon as you open it, instantly drawing you in. But I’m tired of disturbing everyone around me every time I launch the app and it starts playing some overly loud clip from a wannabe creator who has yet to learn about audio normalization. Keeping my iPhone at the maximum volume doesn’t help either, nor does mine fumbling with the control for a few seconds.
Well, I recently later that you can actually open TikTok on mute while still playing! So, don’t be like me and stop embarrassing yourself whenever you open TikTok in public spaces or quiet places; follow the step-by-step tutorial below to make TikTok open in silent mode and make videos play without sound every time you launch the app.
How to always open TikTok in silent mode to keep it muted
TikTok launches with the sound turned on, but you can change the default behavior by toggling an appropriate option in the playback settings.
- Select the Profile tab in the mobile TikTok app.
- Hit the icon with three horizontal lines in the top-right corner and choose “Settings and Privacy” from the menu.
- Scroll to the Content and Display section and choose the “Playback” option.
- Turn on the switch next to “Open TikTok on Mute.”
Doing so will make TikTok always open in silent mode, even if you force-quit and relaunch the app. “Videos will be muted by default when you open TikTok,” according to the feature’s description. To hear the audio, press the physical volume buttons on your device or touch the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of TikTok’s video player. TikTok doesn’t want you to use the app in silent mode for too long, so the icon will expand after a few seconds to reveal the word “Unmute.”
Even if you unmute videos, TikTok will again open on mute the next time you launch it. To make the app revert to opening with the sound turned on, simply toggle the “Open TikTok on Mute” option in the Playback settings.
Be polite, don’t disturb others
This simple setting has solved my woes. No longer do I find myself in awkward social situations when TikTok starts blasting loud audio when I least expect it. Not everyone around me needs to hear stupid videos I’m watching. As a bonus, my music is no longer automatically paused whenever I switch to TikTok!
Launching TikTok in silent mode is especially helpful when using the app at night. Not that you should be doing that, mind you. For good sleep hygiene, stop using devices at least an hour before going to bed to calm your thoughts and avoid sleep disruptions caused by the blue light emitted from smartphone screens.
