To download and install an over-the-air iOS 18.3 or iPadOS 18.3 update, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone or iPad and follow the onscreen instructions. After installing the update, Apple Intelligence is automatically enabled as part of iPhone onboarding. Apple Intelligence is compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models and the iPhone 16 lineup.

Visual Intelligence, only available on the iPhone 16 family, is activated by pressing and holding the Camera Control capture button below the side button. Doing so launches you into a Google Lens-style interface. Pressing the shutter button takes a picture you can use to search on Google by hitting the Search button, or upload it to ChatGPT for analysis by hitting the Ask button.

To learn about all the changes, improvements and fixes, peruse the official iOS 18.3 release notes in Software Update, on Apple’s website or on iDownloadBlog.

iOS 18.3: Apple brings two new Visual Intelligence features

In iOS 18.3, Visual Intelligence also lets you add an event to your calendar from a poster or flyer and identify animals, plants and insects. Both features work as advertised. I snapped up an image of a concert flyer, and Visual Intelligence showed me the option to add an event to the built-in Calendar app. This is one of the Apple Intelligence features Apple demoed at WWDC24, and it’s finally arrived!

iOS and iPadOS 18.3 also remove one feature, Apple’s unhinged AI notification summaries because they don’t work 100 percent reliably and can at times produce inaccurate results. Notifications summarized by Apple Intelligence are turned off for apps from the App Store’s News and Entertainment categories; Apple notes that folks who have turned on notification summaries will “see them again when the feature becomes available” in a future iOS 18 update.

AI notification summaries for other apps are still available. In fact, Apple has updated the design of the notification banner to use italicized text and the glyph to better distinguish notifications that are summarized by Apple Intelligence from standard notifications. Also, you can now turn off notification summaries for an app right from the Lock Screen; just swipe over the notification banner, choose Options and select Turn Off Summaries. Apple made the same tweaks to AI notification summaries on Macs with the macOS Sequoia 15.3 update, released today.

iOS and iPadOS 18.3 re-enable repeating operations in Calculator (press the equals sign again) after Apple disabled them due to the significant redesign of the app. The updates fix issues with the keyboard disappearing when typing to Siri and audio playback continuing until the song ends, even after closing Apple Music.

According to Apple’s security page, iOS and iPadOS 18.3 pack more than three dozen securit patches and bug fixes, including for several AirPlay, some of which may have been exploited on existing devices.
