The iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3 updates expand Apple’s built-in screen recording and streaming features with HDR support and other enhancements.

Apple’s built-in Screen Recording feature lets you record everything displayed on your iPhone’s screen or broadcast a live screen recording to WhatsApp, Instagram, Zoom and other compatible apps. To get started, touch and hold the Screen Recording button in the Control Center to bring up the Screen Recording menu.

Here, you can start a screen recording session and save the finished recording to the Photos app or pick an app from the list to broadcast live video. In iOS and iPadOS 18.3, the Screen Recording feature can now record audio in stereo, capture HDR video and display a live camera overlay using the picture-in-picture feature.

iOS 18.3: New screen recording capabilities

In iOS 18.2 and earlier, the feature captures mono audio. Jeff Benjamin at 9to5Mac has spotted that iOS 18.3’s Screen Recording supports audio capture via multiple onboard microphones for more immersive screen recordings with stereo sound.

Similarly, the Screen Recording feature now captures and saves HDR video. In iOS 18.2 and earlier, onscreen content is dimmed if any HDR (High Dynamic Range) images are displayed when using the Screen Recording feature, and your recordings are saved in the SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) format.

Lastly, the Screen Recording utility in iOS 18.3 lets you view a live camera overlay in picture-in-picture mode while recording the screen. This exciting enhancement lets you capture commentary-style tutorial videos by combining the screen recording with footage from the built-in camera. To use this feature, hit the Camera button next to the Microphone button in the Screen Recording menu.

What else is new in iOS 18.3?

Other new features in iOS 18.3 include repeating operations in the built-in Calculator app, a warning message when cropping PDF screenshots and the ability for Visual Intelligence to recognize plants and animals and add calendar events from flyers and posters. The updated software also enables Apple Intelligence by default during iPhone onboarding and adds visual tweaks to better distinguish notifications summarized by Apple Intelligence.

Apple is expected to release iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia next week, along with software updates for its Apple Watch, Apple TV, Vision Pro, HomePod, and AirPods devices.

The company will follow up on iOS 18.3 with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS Sequoia 15.4 and other related updates in March or early April. iOS 18.4 is expected to bring additional Apple Intelligence improvements to the Siri assistant, default navigation and translation apps for EU iPhone owners and more. iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 should bring the revamped Mail app with AI features to the Mac following its iPhone-only debut alongside iOS 18.1 in October 2024.
