An Apple Intelligence-infused Apple Mail app could be released for Mac and iPad in April alongside the iPadOS 18.4 and macO Sequoia 15.4 software updates.

That’s according to Mark Gurman, who wrote in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that the upgraded Mail app will soon be available on iPads and Macs. The software has been available on iPhones since the release of iOS 18.2 in December but has been missing on iPads and Macs.

Gurman also clarified on X that the revamped Mail app will be coming to iPad and Mac via iPadOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4 in April.

The redesigned Mail app is also coming to iPad and Mac

An excerpt from the newsletter:

There’s another, more under-the-radar feature coming in April as well: The Mac will get the upgraded Mail app that uses AI to prioritize messages and sort content into different inboxes. Right now, iPad and iPhone users are able to tap into the feature — which is terrific — but Mac customers have been left behind. That changes with macOS 15.4, I’m told. For those not familiar with the feature: It sorts mail into a primary category, as well as ones for transactions, promotions, updates and all mail.

The redesigned Mail app also uses Apple Intelligence features like AI summaries and smart replies. It can condense each mail into an AI summary in your inbox instead of providing just the first two lines. When you receive an email from a contact with a message, Apple Intelligence may suggest smart replies above the onscreen keyboard that you can tap to add instead of manually typing out your reply.

Other Apple Intelligence features in the Mail app include the priority inbox at the top highlighting important emails, composing new emails from scratch via ChatGPT, rewriting existing emails, etc. There are non-AI features, too, such as automatic email categorization (Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions) in English available in iPhone XS and newer and a new digest view that groups all of the messages from one sender into a single bundle.

Apple Mail improvements in iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia

Here’s Apple’s description of the upcoming Mail features for Mac and iPad:

  • Priority messages Know what to prioritize as soon as you open Mail with priority messages at the top of your inbox that are based on what’s most urgent.
  • Thread summaries When you open an email thread, tap to see a detailed summary that helps you get the gist of a lengthy email or several emails in the same thread.
  • Preview summaries Know the key information before you even open the thread with brief summaries that appear in the email preview instead of the first few lines of that email.
  • Smart Reply Based on the content of the email you received, Mail will show you smart options to quickly choose from that add detail to the reply, like answering specific questions you were asked. When you make your selections, your Smart Reply incorporates your choices into the generated draft so it’s ready to send.
  • iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 coming in April

iOS 18.4 should also be released alongside iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 in April. iOS 18.4 is said to expand Apple Intelligence to new languages and countries, permit EU iPhone owners to set default navigation and translation apps, and boost Siri with new AI features such as the ability to perform complex actions in apps, better understand onscreen context and more.
