Apple has released a new firmware update for its updated 30W MagSafe charger, which debuted alongside the iPhone 16 family in September 2024.

The update, released on Tuesday, January 14, bumps the firmware’s version number from 2A138 to 2A143. This is the first firmware update for the 30W MagSafe charger.

If you have this charger, you don’t need to do anything; firmware updates for accessories are not delivered via the standard Software Update mechanism for iOS updates. Instead, new MagSafe software is downloaded and installed automatically.

Apple updates the 25W MagSafe charger firmware

Be sure to leave your iPhone on the charger, which must be plugged into a USB-C power source for the firmware update to automatically install overnight.

To check the firmware version number, first connect your MaSafe charger to a power source via USB-C and place your iPhone on it so that it charges. Then, open the Settings app and navigate to General > About. Scroll down to the bottom and choose Apple MagSafe Charger. On the next screen, you’ll see the firmware version number along with manufacturer name and model number.

MagSafe brings 15W wireless charging to iPhone 12 and later. These phones also support Qi, an open standard for wireless charging, at half the speed (7.5W), and its improved version, Qi2, at 15W.

However, the iPhone 16 series can use Apple’s 25W MagSafe charger paired with a 30W power adapter to enable fast charging over MagSafe. It takes just 30 minutes to wirelessly recharge the device from zero to fifty percent.

Qi2 is Android’s MagSafe

Meanwhile, Apple has contributed the MagSafe specification to the latest Qi2 wireless charging protocol, turning it into Android’s MagSafe.

As a result, Qi2 charging pads and stands from Satechi, Anker and others can be implemented with magnetic snapping and 15W speeds without requiring Apple’s certification. If your iPhone supports MagSafe, it will work with Qi2 chargers without skipping a beat. iPhone SE and iPhone 11 don’t have MagSafe charging.
