Will widgets for the next-generation CarPlay come to the existing version?
A widget interface for CarPlay 2 has leaked, but some people are wondering why the existing version of CarPlay doesn’t get to run them.
Apple promised us the next-generation CarPlay in 2022, but the “iPhone in the car” feature keeps getting delayed. The CarPlay page says that the first vehicles with CarPlay 2 will arrive in 2204, but here we are in 2025, and there are none yet.
iPhone-like widgets will be the major addition to CarPlay 2. Apple has already shown off widgets that show key information such as trip duration, distance traveled, phone calls, messages, smart home devices, fuel consumption, and more.
And now, an alleged widgets interface for CarPlay 2 has leaked online via Aaron Perris on X. He unearthed four images from an EU database that seem to depict widgets which resemble their iPhone counterparts.
Leaked widgets for next-generation CarPlay
There’s a clock widget that shows the current time in any city in the world. A calendar widget displays upcoming events, while a weather widget displays the weather forecast at your current location or any city you choose.
There’s also a Now Playing widget with access to playback controls and a mother one that combines navigation and media controls. The widgets seem to be managed through a dedicated widget gallery, similar to widgets on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
The customizable interface allows you to add or remove widgets like you can on your iPhone and even scroll through multiple widgets within instrument clusters.
Some people have wondered why these widgets can’t be added to the current version of CarPlay. There’s merit to such wishes. After all, CarPlay is a mirroring system that runs entirely on your iPhone and outputs the user interface to your car’s touchscreen. Indeed, iPhones are powerful enough to render dozens of widgets across multiple screens that the next generation of CarPlay supports?
