WhatsApp is dropping support for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 series
Meta-owned WhatsApp will soon stop supporting older iPhones, including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models.
This is hardly surprising given that the iPhone 5s was released in 2015, and the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus arrived in 2016. Mobile apps rarely support iPhones that are nearly a decade old, so WhatsApp should be commended for supporting old hardware.
While Meta did not officially break the news, WABetaInfo, a site dedicated to analyzing WhatsApp betas, has discovered clues in the latest WhatsApp beta code indicating that the messaging app will pull support for those devices on May 5, 2025.
People still clinging to their iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus will need to switch to a newer iPhone to continue using WhatsApp past the cut-off date.
WhatsApp to stop supporting iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
You don’t need to worry about switching to a new phone and taking your WhatsApp chats with you, as Meta has built compelling syncing features over the years, making it a cinch to continue using WhatsApp on your new phone right where you left off.
You can back up your entire WhatsApp chat history, along with photos, videos, and other attachments, to iCloud and restore everything from this iCloud archive on a new device. WhatsApp even supports moving chats from iPhone to Android and vice versa. You can find these features in the Chats section of the WhatsApp settings.
WhatsApp recently rolled out voice message transcripts, new video filters, and background replacements for video calls. It is the leading messaging service in the world and is supported across the iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Web platforms.
