M4 MacBook Pro displays: Much brighter outdoors, dimmer in low light
Apple’s new MacBook Pros can boost the brightness of their Liquid Retina XDR Displays even further on sunny days, as well as decrease it more than before in low light.
Thanks to brightness enhancements, using the new MacBook Pro laptops powered by Apple’s M4 chips in very bright or dimly-lit environments is a much more pleasing experience than on the previous M3 MacBook Pros and older.
Official technical specifications for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro reveal that the Liquid Retina XDR Display is capable of 1000 nits of brightness for standard dynamic range (SDR) content, 400 nits more than before. The nit is a measurement of the luminous intensity, with one nit roughly equaling the amount of light emitted by a single candle of specific size and constituents.
This is a significant step up in brightness, more so considering the M3 MacBook Pro’s display couldn’t do more than 600 nits for SDR content (which includes everything except iPhone photos and videos, movies and TV shows).
M4 MacBook Pros screens are brighter outdoors and dimmer in low light
When used under bright outdoor lighting, the new MacBook Pro can ramp up brightness to 1000 nits. Doing so will consume more power, but you’ll have a brighter display to look at.
Like with older models, these displays can get even brighter for HDR content. For example, watching a shot-on-iPhone HDR video outdoors in temperatures less than 25° C may result in peak brightness of 1600 (the same as before).
Like most screens, the Liquid Retina XDR Display reflects your surroundings, which can be very distracting. To help with that, Apple is offering nano-texture glass for the new MacBook Pro as an optional $150 upgrade. If you’re going to be using your MacBook Pro outdoors or indoors under bright lighting, consider this option.
Peak brightness, all the time
Unfortunately, macOS manages peak bridges automatically. You cannot achieve 1000 nits of SDR brightness in normal conditions—not even by cranking up the brightest slider all the way up. However, third-party apps can help with that.
For example, Vivid allows you to set the brightness on any MacBook Pro equipped with a Liquid Retina XDR display to 1000 nits (at the expense of battery life).
Low-light brightness of just 1 nit
This isn’t the only display enhancement on the latest Pros. When used in low-light situations, the Liquid Retina XDR Display on the new M4 MacBook Pros can go as low as one nit. In comparison, the previous MacBook Pro models had a minimum brightness of two nits. Your partner will appreciate not being blasted with bright light when you’re working on your laptop in bed (which you shouldn’t).
