Final Cut Pro will transcribe audio to captions and gain AI effects
Apple has confirmed its Final Cut Pro video editing software will gain the ability to transcribe audio to captions, AI effects and other new features.
The new feature, called Transcribe to Caption, was mentioned briefly in Apple’s promotional video for the new M4-based Mac mini. It taps into artificial intelligence (AI) to turn speech into text and create captions in multiple languages.
Final Cut Pro currently lets you import captions from another app, write them yourself or use a plugin like MotionVFX’s mCaptions. With native caption transcription, video editors will save time versus existing solutions.

AI video effects seem to be in the works, too. “If you’re upgrading from an Intel-based Mac mini, performance is up to 13 times faster with M4 for tasks like speech-to-text processing,” Mac mini product manager Shloka Kini said in Apple’s video.
“So you can use AI to instantly apply video effects and generate captions for a ton of posts with the upcoming version of Final Cut Pro,” she continued.
Kini confirmed that caption transcription uses AI, but it doesn’t seem like it’s part of the Apple Intelligence set of features. The Mac mini walkthrough video also mentions another unreleased Final Cut Pro feature, dubbed Magnetic Mask.
Apple has not formally announced any Final Cut Pro improvements yet. The next Final Cut Pro update will likely drop within a few weeks, ahead of the upcoming FCP Creative Summit in Cupertino. An update to Logic Pro is also expected.
