Apple launches 1-meter Thunderbolt 5 cable alongside Mac mini
While much of Tuesday’s spotlight involved the Mac mini, one detail pertaining to the miniature desktop computer’s higher-tier configuration with the M4 Pro chip meant that came equipped with Thunderbolt 5 ports instead of the Thunderbolt 4 ports that come on lower par models.
As you might come to expect, this meant that Apple needed to publish listings for its own first-party Thunderbolt 5 cables on the brand’s website, and wouldn’t you know it, that’s exactly what happened.
Available now from Apple’s website for $69 is a one-meter-long braided passive Thunderbolt 5 cable that can be used with the highest-tier Mac mini with M4 Pro chip to utilize the Thunderbolt 5 port’s jaw-dropping 120Gb/s date transfer speed capabilities.
According to Apple, this first-party Thunderbolt 5 cable offers the ability to coil for storage without tangling and is backwards compatible with all your Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB-C ports. When used with Thunderbolt 3 or 4, or USB 4, this cable provides 40Gb/s of data transfer speeds, or 10Gb/s of data transfer speeds with USB 3.
Other perks to this cable include the 240W charging capability and the DisplayPort 2.1 video output.
Pros who need this kind of data bandwidth are typically taking advantage of multiple high-end external displays, including Apple’s Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, or other brands’ monitors. They can also daisy-chain those displays with other peripherals to utilize the bandwidth, including external storage drives, docking stations, and even your iPhone or iPad.
Worthy of note, Apple doesn’t yet offer a 3-meter version of this Thunderbolt 5 cable like they do the Thunderbolt 4 cable, so it remains to be seen if that’s coming anytime soon.
While the Mac mini is currently the only machine in Apple’s lineup at the time of this writing that can take advantage of Thunderbolt 5 speeds, the upcoming MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips is fully expected to have Thunderbolt 5 ports built into it as well, so it might be a good idea to pick up one or two of these if you plan to use lots of displays and peripherals with either of these machines.
