iOS 18 seems to be draining some users iPhone battery quickly

There’s an influx in iPhone battery drain complaints whenever Apple releases its annual iOS update, and iOS 18 is no different.

If your iPhone’s battery has been losing its charge faster than usual, you’re not alone, as evidenced by complaints on Reddit and the Apple Support Communities.

The issue affects some iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro owners, but there are complaints from people with older iPhones, too. It’s unclear whether this year’s battery drain is an iOS bug or a temporary occurrence, as iPhone owners are migrating from iOS 17 to iOS 18.

“It’s normal for your apps and features to need to adjust up to 48 hours after an update,” In 2022, Apple Support wrote on X in response to a user complaining about a faster-than-usual battery drain after upgrading to iOS 15.4. This could apply to iOS 18 or any iOS update, for that matter.

Is your iPhone 16 battery draining quickly?

I have experienced an abnormal battery drain with my iPhone 16 Pro Max. At first, I dismissed it as a temporary post-install occurrence. However, the issue still hasn’t resolved itself, as my iPhone continues losing about 30-40% of its charge overnight, seemingly doing nothing.

It also happens in everyday usage, with the battery losing half its charge halfway through the day. That’s not normal, especially with the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s longest-lasting battery of all models. A quick trip to Settings > Battery revealed that background activity in apps I frequently use, like Safari and WhatsApp, contributes to the battery drain, but nothing seems out of the ordinary.

I did try to disable the Background App Refresh feature, to no avail. I also put my iPhone in Airplane Mode to rule out unusual network activity, but the battery still drains quicker than expected. In this case, it feels like there’s a bug in iOS 18 causing the battery to drain quickly. If so, the problem should be fixed in a future iOS update.

Every year, it’s the same old story

It’s not unusual for iPhone battery drain complaints to crop up after Apple unleashes its annual iOS upgrade. After upgrading to a major new iOS version, the Photos app analyzes your whole library for new computer vision features and Spotlight re-indexes everything. Plus, other post-install tasks are running in the background.

This can cause the phone to become warm to touch and drain the battery faster than usual in the first few days. Apple’s support page acknowledges that “you might notice that your device feels warmer” when you set up your iPhone the first time or restore from a backup, among other reasons.

Early adopters will always manually install a major new iOS version as soon as it’s released. For the past few years, iOS has defaulted to automatic iOS updates. As a result, regular folks update to iOS 18 when their iPhone shows them a prompt.

Automatic iOS updates are delivered in stages rather than all at once, helping minimize any fallout from potential issues. It would seem that the transition to iOS 18 isn’t complete, as Apple hasn’t refreshed its iOS adoption rate numbers. This could explain why we’re seeing complaints about abnormal battery drain.
