12 features only found on the new iPhone 16 series
Having second thoughts about upgrading to the latest iPhone 16? In this guide, we list the important new features exclusive to the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max that you won’t find on older models.
Note that every new iPhone comes with obvious upgrades like a faster processor, slightly more durable glass, newer colors, and so forth. We haven’t listed those here.
To make things clear, we’ve mentioned which features are available on the entire iPhone 16 series and which are just on the iPhone 16 Pro models.
1. Thinner bezel
Last year’s Pro Max model already had a very thin black border around the display. The new iPhone 16 Pro Max takes it to the next level by shrinking it even further! As a result, this new phone looks incredible in all scenarios, be it holding for the first time, reading documents, or watching videos.
2. Faster 25W MagSafe charging
All iPhone 16 models support the faster 25-watt MagSafe charging when using a 30W or more adapter. This is a big improvement from previous models that max out at 15 watts.
Apple has also released a new MagSafe charging puck to enable this fast wireless charging capability.
But note that as always, you need to buy the MagSafe charger and the 30W adapter separately.
3. 1-nit minimum brightness
We all love discussing higher brightness, as it makes it easy to view the phone display in bright sunlight.
While all iPhone 16 models can go up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness when outdoors, what’s sure to be a treat for late-night users is the minimum 1 nit brightness.
This 1-nit screen ensures you can use the iPhone 16 comfortably in bed without having to resort to accessibility tricks like Reduce White Point to lower the screen brightness even further than the minimum.
4. Action button
Unlike last year, the Action button is now available on all iPhone 16 models, not just the Pro ones. This button gives you an extra way to trigger quick actions and shortcuts.
5. Camera Control
The new Camera Control button is one of the main highlights of this year’s entire iPhone 16 series. It’s a big button on the lower right edge of the iPhone that lets you open the camera quickly, adjust its shot, and snap a picture. You can even configure this button to open another third-party camera app such as Halide, Snapchat, Instagram, and more.
While the initial reviews of the new Camera Control button have been mixed, it’s sure to improve with new iOS updates.
6. 120 fps video recording in 4K and 1080p resolution
Regular Dolby Vision video recording: Older iPhone models, like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, were capped at 60 frames per second in both 4K and 1080p resolutions. However, the new iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max now allow you to record in 4K and 1080p at 120 frames per second.
ProRes recording: If you record in ProRes, you now have the option to record in 4K at up to 120fps, provided you have connected external storage like an SSD to your iPhone 16 Pro’s USB-C port. This is an improvement from last year’s model whose ProRes external recording was capped at 4K 60 fps.
Slow Mo recording: iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max substantially improve slow motion videos by allowing you to record in 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps. Earlier, it was capped at 1080p resolution.
7. Improvements to sound in video recordings
All iPhone 16 models support Spatial Audio recording from the iPhone Camera for an impressive 3D sound. Video recording on all older models is limited to stereo recording.
Secondly, when editing a recorded video in the iPhone Photos app, you have a new Audio Mix control to select audio effects like Standard, In-Frame, Studio, or Cinematic. You can choose the audio style that focuses on your in-frame voice by reducing other background sounds. If you record podcasts, you can select the Studio effect that tunes the audio in an appropriate style.
8. 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera
iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max have a 48-megapixel (MP) Ultra Wide camera that ensures crisper wide shots. In contrast, the Ultra Wide camera on the previous iPhone 15 Pro Max was 12-megapixel, and the difference in picture quality between its normal 48 MP camera photos and 12 MP wide angle photos was apparent.
If you are into macro photography, this new 48MP iPhone 16 Pro camera ensures better and sharper close-up shots.
9. Spatial photos for Apple Vision Pro
iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max can record spatial videos for Vision Pro. But now, the entire iPhone 16 line-up gets the ability to capture spatial photos as well as spatial videos right from the Camera app. These immersive images and videos can then be enjoyed in full three-dimensional glory on an Apple Vision Pro.
10. 4K 60 fps QuickTake video
QuickTake video (i.e., recording video when in photo mode) on older models is limited to 1080p or 1440p at 30 fps. Regular iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models improve the QuickTake video quality by saving it in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.
11. Wi-Fi 7
All iPhone 16 models support Wi-Fi 7 compared to Wi‑Fi 6E found on the previous generation iPhone 15 Pro. This handy improvement should ensure faster speeds if you have invested in Wi-Fi 7 routers. The addition of Wi-Fi 7 also future proofs iPhone 16 for coming years.
12. Apple Intelligence on all iPhone 16 models
Lastly, all iPhone 16 models get Apple Intelligence, which offers features like Writing Tools, text summarization, better Siri with a new edge animation, Clean Up in the Photos app, Reduce Interruptions Focus, and more. Apart from the 16 series, only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are capable of running Apple Intelligence features.
So, what do you think? Are these updates inciting enough for you to upgrade from your current iPhone to the new iPhone 16 series?
