Apple has unveiled iPad mini 7 with double the storage, Apple Pencil Pro support, the A17 Pro chip, Apple Intelligence and other improvements.

The seventh-generation iPad retains the compact dimensions of its predecessors but now packs more bang for your buck with updated hardware. It runs the A17 Pro chip, which debuted in the iPhone 15 Pros in 2023 and starts at twice the storage.

The A17 Pro has eight gigabytes of unified memory and includes a 2x faster 16-core Neural Engine coprocessor for accelerating machine learning tasks, meaning the new iPad mini 7 meets the system requirements for Apple Intelligence.

Support for Apple Pencil Pro is another welcome improvement (the stylus is also compatible with the M4 iPad Pros and M2 iPad Airs.

Here comes iPad mini 7

The latest iPad mini sports the same 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display as its predecessor. iPad mini 6, released in 2021, was powered by the A15 Bionic chip with four gigabytes of RAM, so you can imagine that the A17 Pro gives iPad mini 7 a significant boost in terms of performance.

Like its predecessor, iPad mini 7 has a 12-megapixel wide camera out the back with 4K video recording and Smart HDR 4 for increased dynamic range on photos. Like before, the 12-megapixel selfie camera uses an ultra-wide lens with Center Stage.

Of course, there’s a USB-C connector at the bottom for charging and data transfer up to 10Gbps (2x faster than iPad mini 6). Unlike the previous mini, the new one supports Wi-Fi 6E for up to 2x the performance of the previous Wi-Fi 6.

Battery life is the same as before: Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video or listening to music, and up to 9 hours of web surfing on cellular. For further information, read the official announcement in Apple Newsroom.

Pricing and availability

iPad mini 7 is available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB versions for $500, $600 and $800, respectively. Basically, you get double the storage for the same price as before (by contrast, iPad mini 6 was only available in 64GB and 256GB versions). 5G cellular models cost an extra $150 and use eSIM. Education pricing starts at $500.

The new tablet is available in four color finishes: Space Gray, Starlight and the new Blue and Purple options. You can pre-order your iPad mini via Apple’s website and the Apple Store app in the United States and 29 countries, with retail availability starting on Wednesday, October 23.

Apple is also offering a new Smart Folio cover for iPad mini 7 in charcoal gray, light violet, denim and sage, priced at $60 in the United States.
