iPhone SE 4 may lack an Action button
The next iPhone SE is expected to feature beefed-up hardware but not a programmable Action button, which debuted on the iPhone 15 Pros.
A Photograph of what look like an iPhone SE 4 case published by Australian leaker Sonny Dickson strongly suggests the upcoming handset may continue using the traditional ringer switch instead of the new Action button.
The image depicts the front and back side with cutouts for a rear camera, a power button on the right and volume buttons and a ringer switch on the left side. This suggests that the button in that position will be like the traditional ringer/silent switch rather than a button that can be pressed inward.
iPhone SE 4 may not have an Action button
At the end of the day, this probably won’t be a major problem for would-be iPhone SE 4 shoppers. Many folks in the market for an iPhone SE prefer a balanced package that’s priced fairly over power user features anyway.
It’s possible that the case manufacturer has left a cutout simply because they don’t know if the button will be present or not. But given that Apple suppliers are expected to begin ramping up mass production of the device this month, it could be that Apple has chosen not to add an Action button, despite the fact that all iPhone 16 models inherited the button from 2023’s iPhone 15 Pro models.
The Action button is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and across all four iPhone 16 models, directly replacing the old mute switch. Unlike the ringer switch, the Action button is programmable, meaning you can assign a custom function to execute when pressed.
Some people feel Apple has missed the opportunity to make the Action button much more versatile by limiting it to the pressing action. It doesn’t distinguish between light and hard presses, long and short ones, etc.
iOS 18 makes the Action button more useful
If your iPhone runs iOS 18, you’re wholeheartedly recommended to check out the Control option. iOS 18 brings a revamped Control Center featuring a dedicated gallery with a dizzying array of controls supplied by Apple and compatible third-party apps installed on your iPhone.
A subset of these controls can be assigned to the Action button, including Dark Mode, Calculator, Scan Code and more, making it more utilitarian.
How the Action button works
By default, the Action button is set to turn on silent mode. To customize it, go to Settings > Action Button to choose between the Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Recognize Music, Translate, Magnifier, Control, Shortcut and Accessibility options. I have mine set to Magnifier, which I often use to read small print because I have astigmatism.
The Shortcut option lets you run custom automation by pressing and holding the Action button. The Accessibility option enables you to assign an assistive feature to the Action button, like fullscreen zoom. Some of the available Action button actions provide additional settings, like setting the Camera app to open into a specific shooting mode like Photo, Selfie, Video, Portrait or Portrait Selfie.
The Control option, added in iOS 18, is quite powerful as it lets you toggle a Control Center switch like AirDrop or Bluetooth without actually opening the Control Center.
