iOS 18.0.1 fixes bugs like unresponsive iPhone 16 displays while patching vulnerabilities discovered in the Messages, Passwords and Camera apps.

iOS 18.0.1 arrived alongside iPadOS 18.0.1 on October 3, 2024, fixing a touchscreen bug and other issues while bringing important security patches. A week later, the company stopped signing iOS 18.0 to prevent downgrades from iOS 18.0.1.

Everyone’s wholeheartedly recommended getting iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 at their earliest convenience. To download and install the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions.

iOS 18.0.1: Important fixes and security patches

iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 address a bug where the Messages app unexpectedly quits when you reply to an iMessage with a shared Apple Watch face. This could cause Messages to repeatedly crash when the user tries to open the conversation in the app. The updates also improved performance, which was impacted because of a bug with memory allocation on certain iPhone and iPad models.

In addition, iOS 18.0.1 fixes two iPhone-only issues. The first caused the touchscreen on the iPhone 16 lineup to become unresponsive in certain circumstances. I’ve had this bug on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, where animations and typing on the keyboard would become sluggish for no apparent reason. Another fix is for an issue with the Camera app on the iPhone 16 Pros, where shooting macro mode video on the ultra-wide camera in 4K with HDR turned off would crash the app.

iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 also fix vulnerabilities in the Passwords and Messages apps. The Passwords app could read aloud your saved passwords with the VoiceOver accessibility feature turned on, which wasn’t intended behavior. This is a logic issue that Apple addressed with improved validation.

Recording audio messages in the Messages app could include a few seconds of audio before the dot indicator is activated. This problem only affected the iPhone 16 lineup, not older models, and was addressed with improved checks.

Last but not least, Apple has released the Apple TV v1.5.0.152 update for Windows to fix a stack buffer overflow issue causing unexpected system termination when parsing a maliciously crafted video, as detailed by this support page.
