Rumor: Apple isn’t developing a smart ring

While companies like Samsung and Oura are betting that smart rings will eventually take off, Apple apparently isn’t among them.

Apple reportedly considered building a smart ring with health sensors but ultimately abandoned the idea in pursuit of more pressing projects. For now, there’s no smart ring project within Apple as the company has no plans to release such a product.

This information comes from Mark Gurman, who wrote in a Q&A section of the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that he doesn’t believe Apple will release a smart ring anytime soon.

One ring to rule them all

Gurman has well-connected sources inside Apple, so there’s no reason to distrust his report, but keep in mind that Apple could always change its mind later. Just because Apple currently has no active smart ring project doesn’t mean it won’t develop such a product down the road. Plus, we heard this story before.

“Apple has no plans to make a phone” was a common theme before the original iPhone debuted. We also remember company executives trying to convince the press that Apple was not building a tablet and a smartwatch, but here we are.

Apple Watch already incorporates very robust health-focused features, and Apple is thought to be adding health sensors to future AirPods next. But why stop at that?

An Apple-branded smart ring that could measure heart rate and body temperature while tracking sleep could be a nice accessory for folks who don’t want to buy an Apple Watch just for health tracking. Besides, Apple did explore the smart ring idea; it filed several patents for finger-worn devices, some of which date back to 2015, outlining features like pressure and haptics, open gestures, Apple Vision Pro control and even a miniature touchscreen display for basic interactions.
