macOS Sequoia 15.1 lesses the frequency of privacy prompts for screen recording
Apple says macOS Sequoia 15.1 reduces the frequency of nagging permission prompts for screen recording apps that you use on a regular basis.
macOS Sequoia was originally supposed to have weekly permission nags for screen recording apps, but poor feedback during the testing phase has forced Apple to switch to monthly prompts in the inaugural macOS Sequoia 15.0 release.
And now, the frequency of these permission nags should decrease further with the macOS Sequoia 15.1 update, so that people won’t need to reauthorize screen recording and screenshotting apps such as PixelSnap, CleanShot X, and others.
The change was implemented in macOS Sequoia 15.1 beta 6. “Applications using our deprecated content capture technologies now have enhanced user awareness policies,” the iPhone maker acknowledges in the update’s release notes.
macOS Sequoia 15.1 cuts down on screen recording permission prompts
The company confirms that people will see fewer dialogs for screen recording apps “they regularly use” provided they have already approved the permission prompt.
Before macOS Sequoia, there were no permission prompts for such apps. But now, any apps that record the screen or take screenshots, whether or not built with Apple’s official ScreenCaptureKit framework, must seek permission from the user.
Apple at first went overboard with weekly prompts. But monthly prompts are also annoying—especially if you have many apps that you don’t use often.
The prompt informs the user that the app is requesting to bypass the system private window picker and directly access the screen and audio. “This will allow [App Name] to record your screen and system audio, including personal or sensitive information that may be visible or audible,” it reads.
Though Apple will no longer put up these prompts once you’ve approved an app to record your screen, it sounds like you’re going to need to regularly use the app to avoid the prompt. What’s unclear is the level of required engagement. Do I need to use an app at least once per week or once per month or daily?
macOS Sequoia is arriving soon
macOS Sequoia 15.1 should launch on Monday, October 28. The update brings other enhancements, like support for drag and drop in iPhone Mirroring, but the headline news is Apple Intelligence, which will also hit compatible iPhones and iPads with iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1.
