Apple is gradually expanding language support for automatic transcripts on Apple Podcasts so even more people can enjoy this handy feature.

Apple Podcasts transcripts require at least iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4 and macOS Sonoma 14.4. The feature is widely accessible in more than 170 countries and regions, according to the Apple Podcasts for Creators page. However, only English, French, German and Spanish podcasts supported transcripts at launch.

iCulture.nl reports that Apple will soon start gradually expanding transcriptions for podcasts spoken in Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese and Swedish. Apple’s support page notes that “transcripts are unavailable in Belarus, China mainland and Russia.”

How to view Apple Podcast transcripts

If a transcript is available for the episode you’re listening to, hit the button resembling a double quotation mark in the bottom-left corner of the expanded mini-player.

  1. Start listening to an episode on your iPhone using the Apple Podcasts app.
  2. Touch the mini-player at the bottom to expand the audio controls.
  3. Hit the button in the bottom-left corner, resembling a dark speech bubble with a quote mark inside.

Like lyrics on Apple Music, transcripts are time-synced. You can scroll forward and backward through the podcast or hit any spot in the transcript to instantly play that specific section. The words are highlighted as you listen, making it easy to follow along, and you can also copy or share text.

If the button is grayed out, that episode has no transcription. Transcripts don’t require Apple Intelligence or on-device processing, as Apple automatically generates them after a new episode is published.

Transcripts are a time-saver. Instead of listening to the host going on and on about nothing, you can peruse the transcript to determine if the episode interests you in the first place. Want to find something specific in an episode? Hit the Search button in the transcript to find particular words and go directly to those sections.
