AirPods 4 charging case: Where is the Bluetooth pairing button located?
AirPods 4 have a pairing button on the charging case that does much more than before, but it’s hiding in plain sight. Here’s where to find it and how it works.
Instead of the good ol’ physical button on the back of your AirPods charging case, this is now a hidden capacitive button on the AirPods 4‘s charging case.
Apple’s disdain for physical buttons is legendary, and the pairing button always struck me as a sore eye. To achieve a smoother appearance, the pairing button is now an invisible touch-sensitive area on the front of the case below the LED.
Where’s the AirPods 4 pairing button?
Double-tapping this area initiates the manual pairing process, with the status light blinking to indicate Bluetooth pairing mode, according to Apple’s support page.
Another support page details reseting AirPods 4 to factory defaults. To reset AirPods 4 (both models), you must put them in their case, close the lid, then wait 30 seconds before opening the lid and double-tapping the front of the case three times.
Contrast this with older AirPods models, where you must press and hold the physical pairing button for about 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber, then white.
Two AirPods 4 charging cases
The AirPods 4’s charging case is smaller than the previous generation, with the regular AirPods 4 ($129) version only using USB-C charging.
The case shipping with the noise-canceling AirPods 4 model ($179), however, also supports wireless charging via the Apple Watch’s magnetic charger and any Qi‑certified charger. Plus, it’s got a built-in speaker at the bottom for Find My and charging status. Neither case supports MagSafe alignment.
