In the quest for a genuine leather iPhone case, look no further than the Woolnut series cases. Combining real Scandinavian leather with a rigid body, Woolnut cases have become my go-to for quality iPhone protection. Offered in a variety of, what I’ll call “Pro” colors, the cases keep a professional and modern style.

It has been almost a year since Apple swore off natural leather in their push toward carbon neutrality and making products that have an increasingly less impact on the environment. I will leave the climate impact discussions to people that are familiar with those topics; I’m just an Apple fanboy and product reviewer.

So, to speak just to the materials themselves and not their overall environmental scope — I prefer leather to FineWoven. To the touch, leather is smooth or grained. To the feel, it is also smooth and supple. To smell, quality leather has an incredible scent. Leather is durable. I simply prefer the leather experience.

Based on reviews of FineWoven materials, it seems that Apple’s preferred materials are none of those things. YouTube is still popping off with recent complaints about their made up material that, to me, looks and feels like denim.

In contrast, Woolnut’s products are almost exclusively leather. I was more than happy to receive a couple of review units for my iPhone 15 Pro Max in exchange for a review. Yes, my commentary is overly positive, but I have the luxury of only accepting and writing about products I’m already prone to enjoy–why operate otherwise?

I have spent time with a variety of Woolnut products (AirPods Max case; iPad folio; MacBook sleeve) and all of them still look like the day I got them, even though these cases are in my daily bag. In the event of wear, it is more of a leather patina than distress.

They are back with an iPhone 15 lineup. Specifically, I was using the iPhone 15 Pro Max case in Cognac and Grey. Their Cognac is incredibly consistent in color across all of the products I’ve utilized.

To commend Woolnut, the first set of cases I received did not have the Action Button. Instead, the case had the Action Button location cutout, similar to cases you find that allow access for the previous mute switch. This made it very difficult to depress the Action Button.

After a conversation with my contacts at Woolnut, they assured me a new version was immediately in production with a built-in case button for the Action button, similar to the volume rocker. A few months later, I received the updated version with the included rocker for the Action Button and, now, I find it hard to fault any part of this case.

Their website doesn’t have an updated image yet, but you can see the new button on my case below:

With six-sided protection, a perfectly fitting design, quality leather, and a MagSafe compatible array, it is your go-to leather case. The buttons even match in textured look, of the iPhone side rails, although they themselves are aluminum. A cutout for the USB-C port is large enough to accommodate cables that are slightly larger than Apple’s USB-C cable and speaker cutouts do not obfuscate any sound.

I prefer the look of a leather case where the leather is wrapped completely around the case, but that tends to allow for peeling. Woolnut solved that challenge by using a TPU sidewall, which is an easier housing for their clicky buttons and longevity.

Inside, iPhone sits against a microfiber bed that connects to the Neodymium MacSafe array, allowing for wireless charging.

Conclusion

Overall, if you are looking for a high quality, well built, genuine leather case, Woolnut’s Leather Case for iPhone 15 is the case I’ve used for the last few generations. At $59 on Woolnut’s webpage, the price is exactly what I would expect to pay for something of this calibre. While $50 was the standard for this type of quality a few years ago, everything has increased slightly price-wise to ensure the quality of the product still meets their standards. Apple’s own FineWoven case is $59 as well. Hard to argue with all natural material in comparison for the same price point.

The Woolnut case is offered in black, cognac, green, and grey for iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
