iOS 18 may let you recolorize app icons and drop them anywhere on the Home Screen

iOS 18 will update the iPhone’s Home Screen grid system by letting you place app icons anywhere you want, plus change their color on a whim.
Mark Gurman broke the news in the most recent edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, writing that iOS 18 will bring more flexibility to the icon layout.
App icons on the Home Screen are locked to an invisible grid system, but iOS 18 will reportedly let you change their layout more freely than before.
On top of that, iOS could also enable even deeper Home Screen customization with the ability to change the color of app icons.
iOS 18 could let you recolonize Home Screen app icons
This sounds like a fun feature. I’d love to be able to make the icons of all the productivity apps I have on my iPhone a specific color. Better yet, let me change the icon color with a Focus mode!
Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:
Another fun improvement (unrelated to AI) will be the revamped iPhone home screen. That will let users change the color of app icons and put them wherever they want. For instance, you can make all your social icons blue or finance-related ones green—and they won’t need to be placed in the standard grid that has existed since day one in 2007.
Changing app icons is currently only possible with a convoluted workaround involving creating a script in the Shortcuts app that opens a specific app and then saves it to the Home Screen with a custom icon. If Gurman’s claim proves valid, you’ll no longer have to use this trick or apps like Widgetsmith for this.
iOS 18 might make the Home Screen grid more flexible
Changing the app icon color will resonate with some people, but putting icons anywhere on the Home Screen should prove a much more popular feature. Android users have been able to drop an icon onto a specific spot on the Home Screen for ages, so Apple is playing a catch-up here. But better late than never, as they say!
Gurman hasn’t provided more details about flexible Home Screen organization, but Joe Rossignol of MacRumors wrote this before Gurman’s report:
While app icons will likely remain locked to an invisible grid system on the Home Screen to ensure there is some uniformity, our sources say that users will be able to arrange icons more freely on iOS 18. For example, we expect that the update will introduce the ability to create blank spaces, rows and columns between app icons.
I would like to put icons of the few most used apps in the bottom 2-3 rows where I can quickly access them with my thumb.
The forced sorting of app icons to the Home Screen’s top probably won’t be going away. There will probably be a toggle in Settings to switch between the fixed-grid layout and a more flexible one.
