iOS 18: AI enhancements coming to Siri, Spotlight Search, Safari and Messages
A new report outlines iOS 18’s rumored AI-powered enhancements based on on-device models in Siri, Spotlight Search, Messages and Safari.
Siri, in particular, should benefit from AI improvements in iOS 18. To that end, Apple is said to have created an internal framework to create large language models (LLM) and unify its machine learning development efforts.
iOS 18 AI: Text summarization everywhere
Marko Zivkovic at AppleInsider has learned some of the benefits Ajax LLM will bring to users, “verified independently through people familiar with the software.”
Siri and Safari will be able to generate a summary of any webpage or document with a new Intelligent Search feature. Text summarization will apparently extend to the Messages app, where the feature can create responses “that relay the content of messages in a simplified way” versus standard canned responses.
On-device processing should enable the feature to work offline, with more complex replies “necessitating server-side processing.” While Apple’s LLM can summarize content from a prompt, that doesn’t necessarily mean users will have a ChatGPT-style interface to interact with a chatbot.
iOS 18 AI: Siri and Spotlight Search improvements
As for Spotlight, Zivkovic writes that this systemwide search feature will “get much better with more intelligent results and sorting.”
Zivkovic’s confusing report claims that an updated version of Siri coming with iOS 18 would bring on-device functionality and “allow for greater functionality than any ordinary chatbot,” but no concrete examples were given.
Apple will preview iOS 18 and other software at its upcoming worldwide developers conference (WWDC) in June, and that’s when we’ll find out for sure what to expect when iOS 18 launches this fall.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman was the first to report that Apple developed an internal framework called Ajax to power its large language models in iOS 18.
