Attention to detail: Apple Pencil Pro casts contextual digital shadows so you know which drawing tool you’re using

Apple’s famous attention to detail is on display again with the latest Apple Pencil Pro, which casts fake shadows when hovered over the screen.
The Apple Pencil Pro brings two new gestures, called squeeze and barrel roll, that allow digital artists to quickly change their drawing tool and precisely control shaped pen and brush tools. It also packs a delightful little perk: fake shadows.
When using the Apple Pencil Pro, your iPad Air or Pro will render a realistic shadow in the shape of the currently-selected tool. If using a calligraphy pen, the new Pencil will cast a digital shadow resembling a calligraphy pen.

Nicolás Álvarez shared on X that Apple’s PencilKit framework includes ten detailed 3D models of drawing tools to render digital shadows. Snazzy Labs published a video on X demonstrating this cool feature, and we’ve included it right ahead. The user selects a tool, and a realistic shadow appears when hovering over an iPad.

This only works when using the new Apple Pencil Pro with the latest M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro. The effect is missing when using the Pencil Pro with any other iPad.
The digital shadow isn’t just a visual flair. Thanks to it, you can see which drawing tool you’re using without squeezing the accessory to bring up the radial menu.
