With the release of macOS 14.5, Apple brought enhancements to the News app from iOS 17.5 sans the handy offline mode for News+ subscribers.

To install the update, click the Apple menu and choose System Settings. In the System Settings window, click General in the sidebar and then Software Update on the right. You may need to type your admin password to continue. Your Mac will restart on its own to finish installing macOS Sonoma 14.5, which may take a while.

No offline mode in Apple News+

The offline mode for News+ subscribers which debuted on iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 is unavailable on macOS Sonoma 14.5, but may arrive in future updates.

This is a convenient feature, although you must be a News+ subscriber to use it. With it, you can continue accessing the Today feed and News+ tab without an internet connection, which could be particularly useful on a long flight.

Apple will likely bring it to the Mac with a future update. Until then, enjoy a new puzzle game in the News app and integration with Game Center.

Release notes: What’s new in macOS Sonoma 14.5?

macOS Sonoma 14.5 includes the following improvements and bug fixes:
● Quartiles is a new and original daily word game that is now available in Apple News+
● Scoreboard in News+ Puzzles gives you access to new player data for Crossword, Mini Crossword and Quartiles, including stats and streaks

Apple will also append detailed information about the security content of macOS Sonoma 14.5 to this support document. No information about any security patches was unavailable at post time, but should be published in a few days.

This usually indicates an update packs patches for zero-day vulnerabilities that Apple doesn’t want to advertise before its user base is up to date.
