If you thought that wasn’t very helpful, don’t even bother reading the watchOS 10.5 release notes as it brings “new features, improvements and bug fixes, including a new Pride Radiance watch face to honor the LGBTQ+ community and culture.”
While that’s about it when it comes to watchOS 10.5, here are other new capabilities in iOS 17.5, iPadOS 17.5 and watchOS 10.5 that we reported on iDB:
- Battery Health on iPad: Your iPad might get a Battery Health menu in Settings > Battery as support for it was spotted in iPadOS 17.5. This would let you monitor important battery health stats like the cycle count and remaining capacity, but keep in mind that this feature may arrive in a subsequent update.

- A reworded “Unknown Part” prompt: A repair prompt in Settings no longer shames those who have repaired their iPhone or iPad with aftermarket parts.
- Repair State mode: Repair State is a new mode for servicing your iPhone without disabling Find My. In the Find My app, select your iPhone under the Devices tab. Scroll down and choose “Remove This Device,” then confirm by selecting “Continue.” An iPhone in a repair state has a stethoscope icon in the devices list.
- Pride wallpaper: A new dynamic wallpaper that animates when you unlock your iPhone. When adding a new wallpaper through Settings > Wallpaper or the Lock Screen, scroll to the Pride section to use them.
What about security fixes?
These updates often come with important security patches for undisclosed vulnerabilities so they’re always worth installing to protect against new online threats. Apple detail the security content of its software in this support document,.
It may take days before Apple discloses what vulnerabilities the update fixed, to ensure folks have the latest protections against zero-day vulnerabilities.
iOS 18 is coming this fall
We may eventually get an iOS 17.6 update. Come next month, Apple will hold its Worldwide Developers Conference that will give us the first previews of iOS 18 and other major updates. After they launch this fall, Apple will continue releasing updates to iOS 17 focused on security patches and bug fixes instead of new features.
iOS 18 will reveal Apple’s plans for generative AI on the iPhone. The company has been using AI technology in its devices since Siri’s introduction in 2011.
And in 2017, the iPhone X debuted the first Neural Engine, a custom Apple silicon in the main chip dedicated to executing AI features such as voice recognition, computer vision, optical character recognition, pattern matching, scene and object detection, etc. All iPhones from the iPhone X onwards feature a Neural Engine.
