Apple appears to be working on iOS 14.8 ahead of iOS 15 launch
Right now, the current version of iOS 14 is iOS 14.7.1. Apple released this version of the mobile operating system at the tail end of July. And it was expected that that would be the final version of iOS 14.7 for the public, with iOS 15‘s arrival penciled in for sometime in September. But it turns out that might not be the case.
Brendan Shanks was first to make the discovery, and shared it on Twitter. In the latest beta version of Xcode 13, Apple specifically mentions iOS 14.8. That may be a sign that Apple is working on another update to iOS 14 before the company launches the next major update to the platform. While that may seem strange, there may be a reason for it.
With the public launch of iOS 15, Apple is making a change to how updates work. iOS users on eligible devices will actually have the ability to choose to either update to iOS 15 right when it launches (or soon after) if they want to use the most up-to-date version of the platform, and use all those new features. Or, they can stick with iOS 14. If they choose the latter route, they will continue to get security updates, but not have to make the switch to iOS 15 if they don’t want.

The update to iOS 14.8 could be the final version of the mobile operating system for the public, with security updates sent to devices after that.
As noted today by 9to5Mac, there isn’t entirely brand new for Apple, either. Last year, Apple launched iOS 13.7 on September 1. That was just a couple of weeks before Apple launched iOS 14 to the public — and there was no dedicated plan to keep users on iOS 13 like there is to let folks stay on iOS 14 this time around.
The question at the moment is when iOS 14.8 might arrive. As noted above, it could be in early September. Or may arrive before the end of this month. Either way, as soon as the new software launches we will let you know.
