How to stop getting spam RCS messages on iPhone and Android
Check out this quick tip to address RCS spam and unsolicited business texts on iPhone or Android phone to keep your Messages app clean and organized.
Just like iMessage and SMS, RCS is not immune to spam texts and promotional business messages, including from companies you never signed up for.
Addressing this is pretty straightforward, but the caveat is that you’ll have to turn off the RCS feature entirely (at least on Android). Now, depending on which part of the world you’re reading this post from, turning off RCS can either be a big deal breaker or something you won’t even miss.
If the Apple Messages app or Android phone’s Google Messages app is your main communication app, then turning off RCS can significantly degrade your texting experience. For instance, with RCS turned off, when you text from your iPhone to your Android friend, photos won’t be sent in high quality, stickers and reactions will seem off, group texting will degrade, and read receipts and typing indicators will be unavailable.
But if you’re from Europe, Asia, or Africa, where WhatsApp, Line, Viber, Telegram, and other such apps are most widely used, the consequences of turning off RCS won’t even be noticeable to you. And on the plus side, you can save yourself from unwanted promotional messages. Just remember that even after disabling RCS, spam, scam, and promotional SMS texts and iMessages will continue as usual (and turning these off may not be very practical).
That said, follow these steps to stop getting promotional RCS messages on both iOS and Android.
iOS
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone running the latest version of iOS.
- Tap Apps from the bottom and select Messages.
- Tap RCS Messaging.
- Turn off RCS Business Messages and, over the course of a few days, check if promotional messages have stopped. If not, return to this screen and disable RCS Messaging altogether.
Android
- Open the stock Google Messages app on your Android smartphone.
- Tap your profile icon from the top.
- Tap Messages settings.
- Select RCS chats.
- Disable the switch next to “Turn on RCS chats.”
Most of my family members have SIM cards from the same carrier, and we all used to get the same promotional RCS messages from GAP, Scapia, Superdry, and other such companies. Of course, none of us had signed up with these companies. Turning off RCS Business Messages on my iPhone, entirely disabling RCS Messaging on my wife’s iPhone, and turning off RCS chats on our Android phones have proved to be a huge help. All such promotional messages have stopped!
Let us know how it goes for you.
And the golden tip of all, don’t add your phone number to every app and website you sign up for; do this only when absolutely necessary. This small step can significantly cut down spam texts and calls.
