Fix AirPods volume controls not working
Go through these quick troubleshooting tips if you’re unable to change the call, music, video, or podcasts volume directly from your AirPods.
AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max support volume control. Simply swipe up or down with one finger on either AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3 stem to increase or decrease the volume. On AirPods Max, rotate the Digital Crown to turn the volume up or down.
If you can’t change the volume directly from your supported AirPods for some reason, follow the tips below to fix the problem.
Note: You can’t change the volume directly on AirPods 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generations, or on AirPods Pro 1st generation. If you have one of these AirPods models, you can adjust the volume by asking Siri or using the volume keys on the primary device (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android phone, Apple TV, etc.).
Check Volume Swipe control settings
Even though changing volume by swiping on the AirPods stem is enabled by default, you or someone with access to your devices, such as your spouse or kids, may have unknowingly turned it off. Follow these steps to turn the feature back on:
- Connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open the iOS Settings app and tap Accessibility.
- Tap AirPods.
- Scroll down and turn on Volume Swipe under the Volume Control heading if it’s off. You can also select a preffered wait time between swipes: Default, Longer, or Longest.
Now try adjusting the volume by swiping on the left or right AirPod stem. If it doesn’t work, follow the remaining solutions.
Put AirPods in the charging case
Place both of your AirPods Pro in their charging case and close the lid for about 15 seconds. For AirPods Max, plug it in to charge.
Restart the main device
Turn off your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other device and turn it back on. Then, connect your AirPods Pro 2 or 3 and check if the volume swipe controls work.
Check if the volume can be changed on the device
You may not be able to change the media volume in a few rare apps even when you press the physical volume keys on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If that’s the case, changing volume via AirPods won’t work as well. Look for an in-app volume slider or setting that addresses this problem.
Forget your AirPods and pair them again
If the above tips haven’t worked for you, go to your device’s Bluetooth settings and forget the AirPods. On iOS and macOS, you can do that by tapping the info button ⓘ next to the AirPods name. After forgetting, put the AirPods in the charging case and pair them again.
Factory reset your AirPods
If none of the above solutions helped fix the volume control issue, go ahead and factory reset your AirPods and remove them from your Apple Account. Then, pair the AirPods again, and you should be able to turn the volume up and down with a swipe.
If the problem continues…
When even a complete factory reset doesn’t fix the problem, make sure your AirPods are running the latest firmware. If the problem remains unaddressed, it could indicate a hardware issue that only Apple can resolve. Get your wireless buds checked at an Apple or Apple-authorized store.

I paired my AirPods Pro 3 with my inexpensive Android phone, and volume swipe controls worked just like it does on my iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. No extra setup was required.
