Fix wireless and wired CarPlay issues on iPhone 17 series

In this troubleshooting guide, we go over several solutions to address wireless and wired CarPlay issues that have affected several people with the new iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.

The CarPlay problem on iPhone 17

Before getting to addressing the issue, here are some of the problems you might face with CarPlay on the iPhone 17 series:

  • Your previous iPhone, even on iOS 26, runs CarPlay perfectly in the same vehicle, but iPhone 17 doesn’t.
  • Wireless CarPlay stops after a few minutes
  • CarPlay freezes soon after connection. In other words, your car’s infotainment system gets stuck.
  • CarPlay hangs or disconnects if you get a phone call (and you also lose the call in the process).
  • You can’t get wireless or wired CarPlay to work at all.

I have had minor CarPlay issues with my iOS 26 device in my old 2022 car, and using a different USB-C cable helped solve the problem. But Apple Community, Reddit, and other web forums are full of user complaints about CarPlay issues on the new iPhone 17 models.

Now, some reports suggest the issue could be due to the new in-house N1 wireless chip Apple is using in these latest models, which don’t play nice with some existing CarPlay systems and adapters, causing connection problems when using wireless CarPlay.

Others suggest software issues in iOS 26, and some users have even shared that the CarPlay problem was specific to their iPhone 17 model, and switching to a different iPhone 17 unit helped.

I reviewed tons of CarPlay-related questions and answers on the web and have mentioned them below. Hopefully, one or more of these solutions will address your CarPlay problems on iPhone 17.

Toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth completely off and back on

If you can’t use wireless CarPlay with your iPhone 17, go to the Settings app (not Control Center) and do the following:

  • Turn off both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Wait for 20 seconds
  • Turn both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on and retry using CarPlay. You can also turn them on by going to Settings > General > CarPlay.

Restart everything

Sometimes, the issue may be related to temporary system glitches. So, in case you haven’t already, turn your iPhone and your car/ car’s infotainment system off and back on.

Consider removing the MagSafe protective case

If you’re using an Apple or third-party MagSafe case with magnets, temporarily remove it, then try using CarPlay.

Update to the latest version of iOS 26

Most CarPlay issues on iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air were reported in the initial builds of iOS 26. If you haven’t updated since then, fearing things may get worse, please go to device Settings > General > Software Update and install the most recent version of iOS 26.

Keep your iPhone unlocked when connecting to CarPlay

When I go to my iPhone Settings > General > CarPlay and select my car, there is an option for “Allow CarPlay While Locked.” Keeping this enabled means the iPhone can connect to the car’s system for CarPlay, without having to enter the phone passcode. This used to work perfectly in the past with my Renault car. But after updating to iOS 26, I have noticed that neither my iPhone nor my wife’s connects to CarPlay unless we unlock the device.

As of writing, my iPhone is running the latest version of iOS 26.2 developer beta, while my wife’s device is on iOS 26.1 non-beta.

So, until Apple solves this issue, I think your only option is to unlock the iPhone and then try connecting to your vehicle’s CarPlay system. The “Allow CarPlay While Locked” just doesn’t seem to work reliably.

Use a different USB cable

This tip is super important. You can get USB-C cables for a dollar or less! But remember that not all USB-C cables are the same, and not all of them support CarPlay. Try using a different cable from a more reputable manufacturer. If your car has a USB-C port, use the Apple cable provided in the box with your iPhone 17.

Turn off the VPN or delete and configure it again

Several people on Apple’s forum have reported that they solved wireless CarPlay issues by turning off the VPN. A few suggested that simply turning off the VPN didn’t help, but deleting the VPN app and its configuration did fix the CarPlay connection issues, and the problem stayed away even after they set up the VPN again.

So, try these tips if you use a VPN on your iPhone. Hopefully, this will address the problem.

Delete any security apps like MS Defender

Another user comment that caught my eye was related to Microsoft Defender. The person shared that removing MS Defender from their iPhone solved the CarPlay problems. If you, too, use such software or ‘anti-virus’ apps on your Apple smartphone, consider removing them, and see if this helps fix the CarPlay connection issues.

Try disconnecting your Apple Watch from your iPhone

A good number of iPhone 17 users were able to resolve CarPlay issues by simply turning off their Apple Watch while driving or disabling its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Settings. I understand this isn’t a practical solution, but try it out nonetheless in the meantime, and stay on the lookout for a new iOS 26 update.

Try turning off Bluetooth on your iPhone

Bluetooth on my iPhone is almost always on, and when I get into my car and turn up the ignition, my phone automatically connects to the car’s infotainment system via Bluetooth. Then, when I connect to CarPlay, I often get an alert on my car’s screen saying “Bluetooth is disconnected.” In rare cases, this pop-up alert even messes up the ongoing CarPlay connection.

So, if you also face this issue with wired CarPlay, turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone before starting your car’s media system. If you use wireless CarPlay, try turning off Bluetooth after you have connected to wireless CarPlay. Note that this may not work with all cars and CarPlay adapters.

Rename your iPhone

A user on Apple’s forum shared that renaming their iPhone from Settings > General > Name solved CarPlay disconnections up to an extent. Since renaming is simple and has practically no downside, try it on your iPhone 17 and see if it addresses the CarPlay issues.

Remove your car and add it again

If you still can’t get CarPlay to work, or if disconnections and system freezes continue, forget your car in iPhone Settings > General > CarPlay, then set it up again. You can also remove your iPhone from the CarPlay settings of your vehicle’s infotainment system.

Reset all network settings

Connection problems with wireless CarPlay can also be solved by resetting all network settings. Go to iPhone 17 Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset and restore the network settings. After that, reconnect to wireless CarPlay, and it should work without hiccups.

Use another wireless CarPlay adapter if available

If you use an external wireless CarPlay adapter (like this one), and it isn’t able to maintain a stable connection with your iPhone 17 model, then use a different CarPlay adapter if available or borrow one from a friend. This will help determine whether the problem is related to compatibility between your CarPaly adapter and your iPhone 17, or just to your iPhone 17.

Return your new iPhone 17

Talk to Apple Support, and if they, too, aren’t able to solve your CarPlay issues, you can consider returning your new iPhone 17 and buying a different unit. But of course, you’ll only be able to do this if you’re still within the 14-day return window.

Note: Apple doesn’t allow returning bought iPhones and other devices in all countries.
