Why foldable iPhone needs four cameras

Apple’s first foldable iPhone will reportedly have Touch ID instead of Face ID and be equipped with four cameras in total, and here’s why.
Mark Gurman shared some tidbits he’s heard about Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Writing in the lates edition of the Power On newsletter on Bloomberg, he said the device will open like a book, with a large inner display when unfolded. It would apparently feature one front camera, one inner camera and two back cameras.
None of these cameras will be infrared, like the TrueDepth camera on Face ID-enabled iPhones. Instead, Touch ID will be built into the side button.
Foldable iPhone should be equipped with four cameras
One camera will be on the front of the device when it’s in a folded position. When unfolded, there will be another camera on the inside. Both these cameras will let you take selfies, whether you use the device folded or unfolded. On top of these two cameras, the device will reportedly have two cameras out the back.
Gurman didn’t share any specific about the rear cameras. It’s safe to presume that one of them will be the primary shooter with the highest resolution for taking the best-quality photos and videos. However, it’s unclear if the other rear camera will be for telephoto or ultra-wide images.
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said earlier that the foldable iPhone would feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner display. In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z is equipped with a 6.5-inch outer screen and an 8-inch inner screen. Both Apple’s device and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 are expected to have a virtually invisible crease.
Gurman also said that the device will use Apple’s second-generation C2 modem for cellular connectivity which should narrow the gap with Qualcomm’s cellular chip performance. The same modem is expected to be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models next year. The first C1 modem debuted in the iPhone 16e. There won’t be a physical SIM card slot because the foldable iPhone should only have eSIM technology, said Gurman.

Gurman has learned that Apple will achieve this by using in-cell instead of on-cell display technology that other iPhones already use, along with a laser-drilled metal screen plate that will withstand the stress of bending much better.
The foldable iPhone should come in at least black and white color finishes that Apple is currently testing. This suggests the device is in a late development stage. The first foldable iPhone should release in September 2026, said Gurman.
