Apple Intelligence will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT-5 model when iOS 26 arrives

Apple has confirmed that it will integrate OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT-5 model into the Apple Intelligence suite when its iOS 26 software launches next month.

Apple has confirmed to Zac Hall over at 9to5Mac that ChatGPT integration within Apple Intelligence will take advantage of the newly launched GPT-5 AI model with iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26.

Among other improvements, ChatGPT-5 brings improved voice integration and video perception, enhanced coding tools, advanced reasoning with chain-of-thought, new agentic functionality and much more.

Apple Intelligence to integrate ChatGPT-5 this fall

Apple Intelligence in iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 currently uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. But when these operating systems arrive this fall, iPhone, iPad and Mac owners will benefit from Siri’s ability to use ChatGPT-5 for complex queries that it can’t handle itself.

You can set up Apple Intelligence to use ChatGPT in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Here, you can toggle ChatGPT integration, turn on the confirmation prompt for handing off complex requests to ChatGPT, as well as optionally sign in with your ChatGPT account if you’d like to take advantage of subscription benefits for logged-in users, including keeping a history of your requests.

ChatGPT integration is available in three places. First, the Siri assistant can use ChatGPT to answer questions it couldn’t resolve itself, including web searches and questions about photos and documents.

Second, in the visual intelligence feature of Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT can answer questions about the places and objects in the camera viewfinder. And third, the Writing Tools rely on ChatGPT to power text generation and summarization.

All requests that Apple Intelligence hands off to ChatGPT are anonymized, with OpenAI not permitted to store requests to train its models. For logged-in users, however, OpenAI’s privacy policy applies.

In addition to ChatGPT 5, OpenAI yesterday also unveiled features to promote healthier ChatGPT usage, such as a break reminder during prolonged chat sessions, along with a new open weight model, called gpt-oss, that can run locally on Apple silicon-powered Macs with at least 16GB of RAM.
