Leaked iPhone 17 Pro cases show MagSafe is getting a makeover

The MagSafe magnet array on the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup will be redesigned and rearranged, with a circle broken at the bottom.

Accessory vendors usually base their cases on rumors, and one of the prevailing rumors concerning Apple’s 2025 iPhone lineup claims MagSafe will be redesigned across the iPhone 17 lineup, more so on the iPhone 17 Pro models.

MacRumors reported today that Apple’s giving MagSafe a bit of a facelift on the upcoming iPhone 17 Pros, with the user “UnclePan” on the Chinese social media platform Weibo sharing a new image of third-party MagSafe cases for the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max that reval MagSafe changes.

iPhone 17 lineup may bring MagSafe changes

What’s interesting is that the MagSafe magnet ring on the leaked cases seems to be positioned noticeably lower than on previous iPhones. But that’s not all; on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max cases, there’s a small gap at the bottom of the MagSafe ring. And that little break in the ring at the bottom could be a way to keep the Apple logo visible—especially through clear or MagSafe-compatible cases.

This change isn’t coming out of nowhere. Earlier rumors suggested that the iPhone 17 Pro models will have significantly bigger camera bumps that stretch across the width of the phone. That new camera layout likely forced Apple to shift things around on the back—hence the lower logo and MagSafe ring.

The good news? Even with this redesign, existing MagSafe accessories should still work just fine. The changes seem to be all about looks, not function. Needless to say, the MagSafe outline shown on the leaked case images will only be visible on cases, and not on the iPhones directly.

We’re expecting Apple to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup sometime in the week of September 8, 2025. Until then, leaks are giving us a fun sneak peek at what’s to come. Stay tuned as this fall’s iPhone drop is shaping up to be pretty interesting.

MagSafe and Qi2 charging

MagSafe on the iPhone 17 lineup should support up to 25W charging via MagSafe when paired with a 30W Apple power adapter, the same as the iPhone 16 lineup. However, the iPhone 17 lineup will support the latest Qi 2 wireless charging protocol that increases charging speed from 15W to 25W, matching MagSafe.

On the iPhone 16 and earlier models, Qi maxes out at 15W. It’s unclear whether a faster charging speed could be unlocked via a software update or if the latest Qi 2.2, rebranded as Qi2 25W, requires new hardware.

All iPhones from the iPhone 12 onward support MagSafe. Apple has contributed MagSafe for free to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) to bring MagSafe perks like magnetic snapping and faster charging at 15W to the base Qi2 specification.
