Wanna create Liquid Glass icons? Download Apple’s new Icon Composer tool

Apple’s new Icon Composer app lets you create Liquid Glass icons that render beautifully in light, dark, tinted or clear looks.

iOS 26 and Apple’s operating systems releasing publicly this fall bring a major user interface overhaul across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch and CarPlay. Dubbed Liquid Glass, the new look simulates a translucent glass-like material that reflects its surroundings. It’s the biggest visual overhaul since iOS 7 in 2013.

To help developers (or anyone, for that matter) create icons that conform to the new guidelines, Apple has released a new free tool for the Mac, dubbed Icon Composer. Currently in beta, Icon Composer lets you create a single icon design and then customize it for each platform. Apple also shared today updated design resources for Sketch and app icon templates for Sketch, Photoshop and Illustrator.

The app can be downloaded through the Apple Developer website, and you don’t need to be a registered developer or have a developer account to download and use it. Icon Composer requires macOS Sequoia or later.

“Icon Composer lets you create layered icons out of Liquid Glass from a single design for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch,” reads the description. “With a new multi-layer icon format, you can easily adjust Liquid Glass properties, preview with dynamic lighting effects and annotate across appearance modes.”

Icon Composer lets you import and organize artwork layers, and adjust properties such as specular highlights, blur, translucency and shadows. You can create distinct icon looks for Default, Dark and Mono modes, review icons in various sizes on different backgrounds and wallpapers, compare your changes to the original file, and see a preview of how the icon responds to dynamic lighting.

The app looks like something the Pixelmator team (which Apple acquired) might create. You can import your finished icons straight into Xcode, Apple’s environment for software development, or export flattened versions to use elsewhere.

Updated design resources

The updated design resources for iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 for Sketch and app icon templates for Sketch, Photoshop and Illustrator are available to download through the Apple Design Resources website.

Available resources include Liquid Glass user interface elements like tab bars that shrink when scrolling, share sheets, menus, arrow buttons, translucent window controls and so forth. The updated design resources don’t yet include design templates for tvOS 26, visionOS 26 and or watchOS 26.
