Pixelmator Pro photo editing software for macOS updated to utilize Apple Intelligence on supported Macs

Apple released an updated build of Pixelmator Pro for macOS on Monday, bringing with it a slew of new features and improvements, including newfangled support for Apple Intelligence – Apple’s in-house artificial intelligence brand that it uses to enhance features across its platforms.
Apple acquired Pixelmator Pro for macOS, Pixelmator for iOS and iPadOS, and Photomator for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS last year, which didn’t come off as particularly surprising given just how quickly the two teams have worked together to showcase new software features at Apple’s Keynote presentations in the past.
Pixelmator Pro offers pro-grade photo-editing tools comparable to some of those found in Adobe Photoshop, but without the monthly subscription. With the incorporation of Apple Intelligence, the software is now even more powerful, bringing the following new features to the app’s user experience in version 3.7:
Image Playground
• With Image Playground, you can now create fun, original images based on a photo, a description, or people from your Photos library.
• Use the new Add to Playground feature to easily recreate any image layers or drawings in beautiful artistic styles like animation, illustration, or sketch.
• Insert your created images as new separate layers from the Insert menu at the top of your screen or replace any existing layers using the Replace Layer feature.
• When working with templates or mockups, you can easily replace placeholder images with your Image Playground creations.
Writing Tools
• With support for Writing Tools, you can proofread, summarize, rewrite, and modify the tone of any text in your designs.
• The Compose feature lets you tap into the power of ChatGPT to create new, original text content from scratch based or a quick prompt or a description.
• Simply hover over or Control-click any highlighted text in Pixelmator Pro and click Writing Tools to get started.
Other Improvements
• You can now open and edit RAW images from OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II cameras, taken using High Res Shot.
• VoiceOver support has been improved to provide spoken and braille descriptions of Pixelmator Pro tools.
• You can also use your keyboard to navigate through tool option items with VoiceOver.
• Hover over items in the Tools sidebar to display their names in large text using Hover Text.
While Apple Intelligence is surely the flagship new feature in this version 3.7 release, it’s worth noting that it will only work on devices that support Apple Intelligence. For Macs, this means that Apple Silicon is required, as Apple says that Apple Intelligence runs on Macs with the M1 or later chip only. Sorry… Intel users…
In addition to the new Apple Intelligence-driven features, which include support for Image Playground and Writing Tools, Apple also touts improvements for RAW camera file format support and VoiceOver-based accessibility improvements.
The latest update to Pixelmator Pro is available for free to existing owners of the app, while those looking to take advantage of the app for the first time can acquire it from the Mac App Store for just $49.99.
