Meta has launched message summaries in WhatsApp for iOS and Android, using artificial intelligence (AI) to create a summary of your unread messages in a chat.

The feature is currently rolling out to WhatsApp users in the United States in the English language. “We hope to bring it to other languages and countries later this year,” Meta wrote on the WhatsApp blog. This feature was designed to give you a rough idea of what’s happening before actually reading unread messages.

Message summaries are turned off by default, but you can turn them on in the WhatsApp settings, provided the feature has rolled out to you. After that, you’ll be able to tap on a new label denoting the number of unread messages in a chat to create a summary of unread messages in that chat.

WhatsApp is gaining AI-powered message summaries

To create a summary, your messages need to be uploaded to the cloud. The feature uses Meta’s Private Processing technology, which is a secure cloud environment where AI models process data “without exposing it to unauthorized parties.” No one, Meta included, can see your messages or the private summaries. Also, chat participants cannot see that you summarized unread messages.

What’s important is that WhatsApp allows you to selectively share specific conversations for AI features by using the app’s Advanced Chat Privacy feature. But first, you need to turn on advanced chat privacy on WhatsApp. To do so, tap the name of the chat at the top of the interface and choose “Advanced chat privacy,” then turn on the “Advanced chat privacy” switch and select “Continue.”

Message summaries are first rolling out to people in the United States in the English language, with additional countries and languages coming later. To ensure you’re running the latest version of the app, open WhatsApp’s App Store page and click “Update.” If you don’t see this option, you already have the latest version.

New features in the works

WhatsApp has been testing usernames that will finally enable you to use the app without revealing your actual mobile phone number. Also, Meta could finally release a native iPad app for Instagram; The Information said a while ago that Meta was developing such an app, with Mark Gurman coroborrating the report on Bloomberg and confirming that the app is on track for release later this year.

WhatsApp recently launched a native iPad app and launched a bunch of enhancements like voice chat in group conversations, AI wallpapers, message summarization and new privacy controls, plus nearly a dozen enhancements across the Chats, Calls and Updates tabs.
