The new Visited Places service in Apple Maps is among the new features that’ll be unavailable to EU iPhone owners when iOS 26 launches this fall.

iPhone owners in Europe will need to wait longer for the Visited Places feature as Apple is finding it increasingly difficult to comply with the EU’s Digital Market Act after being fined half a billion euros over non-compliance earlier this year.

The Wall Street Journal reports that iOS 26’s new Visited Places feature in the Maps app won’t be coming to EU iPhone owners when the first public version of the operating system is released this fall.

Visited Places on iOS 26 won’t launch in the EU this fall

“We’ve already had to make the decision to delay the release of products and features we announced this month for our EU customers,” Kyle Andeer, Apple’s vice president of legal, told the newspaper. The company is still debating what new features in iOS 26 may be problematic to deliver for EU customers and how to still deliver them without breaking the EU’s rules.

Apple is considered a gatekeeper company and the Digital Markets Act was designed to regulate the practices of gatekeeper platforms.

Andeer repeated Apple’s favorite talking point, which boils down to compromised user security if Apple were to open up its ecosystem to competitors. Andeer told The Wall Street Journal that the changes Apple has already implemented to be in compliance “create real privacy, security and safety risks to our users.”

Apple and the EU obviously continue to disagree on the Digital Markets Act’s potential security risks and privacy implications.

What are Visited Places on Apple Maps?

Visited Places is an optional new feature in the built-in Maps app on the iPhone provided by Apple’s iOS 26 operating system. It collates the places you’ve visited in a new Visited Places section in the app’s profile menu. Visited Places are protected with end-to-end encryption and cannot be accessed by Apple or any other parties.

Basically, Visited Places is an automatic bookmarking service on Apple Maps that saves visited places like cafes and restaurants so you don’t have to. Already, Apple Maps remembers where you parked your car and lets you favorite or save a place by hitting the star icon or choosing “Add to Library” in the place card’s three-dotted menu. With Visited Places, there’s no user intervention required to save places.

The Visited Places feature is available on the iPhone 12 (2018) and newer, M4 iPad Pro, fifth-generation and later 12.9-inch iPad Pro, third-generation and later 11-inch iPad Pro, M2 and later iPad Air, fifth-generation and later iPad Air, eleventh-generation iPad (A16) and sixth-generation and newer iPad mini. Visited Places are unavailable on the iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
