At WWDC 2025, Apple said that it would be empowering users of various AirPods models with new features when the company’s suite of updated software launches for each of its devices later this Fall.

Shortly after the announcement, Apple released an updated beta firmware for AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and AirPods 4 so that developers who install the beta software can update their AirPods earbuds to test those features as well. That beta firmware comes in the form of version 8A5279d and is only available to users of Apple’s latest iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 26 Tahoe beta software.

Among some of the different new features coming to AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and AirPods 4 later this Fall are the following:

Record Studio-Quality Vocals

Apple promises that AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and AirPods 4 will get support for recording studio-quality vocals, which is being made possible due to improved tonal balance and timbre that can authentically represent the texture of a person’s speaking voice.

Camera Control

AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and AirPods 4 will also be capable of being used as a Camera Control. Whether you’re trying to snap a photograph remotely, or begin video recording in your favorite app, the stem of your favorite supported AirPods can be used to initiate that process without being in reaching distance of your iPhone or iPad.

Sleep-Based Audio Control

If you ever fall asleep to your favorite tunes or podcasts, your AirPods Pro (2nd generation) or AirPods 4 will be capable of automatically pausing playback when you fall asleep so that you can sleep soundly (pun intended) without constant noise in your ears.

Seamless CarPlay Switching

If you have a CarPlay-capable vehicle, and you have AirPods Pro (2nd generation) or AirPods 4 in your ears, then audio will now switch automatically to your vehicle’s speakers when you sit in your car and turn the key.

Manual Firmware Updates

While firmware updates for all models of AirPods have long been an automatic process that the end user couldn’t control (which was beyond annoying), it seems that iOS & iPadOS 26 will finally prompt users about firmware updates for their AirPods so that they can manually choose to apply those updates.

We’re certain that Apple will only continue to upgrade the feature sets on its popular AirPods platforms given their popularity. Of course, Apple is likely ready to pull the trigger on its next generation of AirPods soon, so we expect to hear something from them later this year about that.
