The built-in Preview app from the Mac should expand to the iPhone and iPad with Apple’s iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 updates to let you manage PDFs.

Mark Gurman wrote on Bloomberg that Preview is coming to the iPhone. Preview is the built-in Mac app for viewing, editing and annotating PDF documents and bitmap images. It comes preinstalled on every Mac, and should soon be preinstalled on iPhones and iPads with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26.

Preview will let you manage PDFs, like on the Mac, but Gurman wouldn’t say whether the image-editing capabilities of Preview will also expand to the iPhone and iPad. “Apple is bringing its longstanding Preview app from macOS to iPadOS and iOS for the first time, giving iPad and iPhone users an in-house solution to PDF management, annotation and editing,” he said.

iOS 26: macOS Preview is coming to the iPhone

Gurman describes the iOS version of Preview as looking similar to the Mac version, but he only seems to have seen the splash screen and nothing else.

“The software looks similar to the Mac version, and its launch screen is in the same style as apps like Pages and Keynote,” he wrote. “It includes a big logo on the top portion of the screen advertising the Preview name and a gallery of document options below it,” he added.

I think Gurman’s source within Apple is someone preparing slide decks for Apple’s presentations. That would explain his awesome scoops that often come with just enough information to whet your appetite without revealing crucial details.

The iPhone needs a dedicated PDF app

The iPhone and iPad deserve a dedicated PDF app. iOS and iPadOS feature a robust file manager in the Files app that lets you view and annotate PDFs, while the Markup feature with its annotation tools has been available within other apps.

I would gladly use a dedicated app to manage and view all my PDFs in one place, with all the annotating tools and other related features. Such an app would especially make sense on the iPad, and it might sherlock PDF apps like Readdle’s PDF Expert.

iOS 26 is expected to bring a host of so-called quality-of-life changes and under-the-hood tweaks people have been asking for a long time such as notes export in the Markdown format, polls in group Messages chats, fullscreen animated album art on the Lock Screen, AirPod sleep detection and camera trigger, and much more.

The biggest change should be a major design overhaul that will refine the user interfaces across Apple’s devices with some of the Vision Pro’s interface elements.

Apple will preview Preview at WWDC 25

Apple will preview the Preview app (pun intended!) and other new features in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 and other renamed operating systems in a June 9 keynote at its Worldwide Developers Conference.

The first developer previews of iOS 26 and other updates will drop after the keynote, but you’ll need to be a member of the Apple Developer Program to install them on your devices. Versions for public beta testing will be released in July. The general public will be able to install iOS 26 and other updates when they drop this fall.
