Apple reluctantly confirms AI Siri’s 2026 release date

Apple has finally (although reluctantly) confirmed that Siri’s AI upgrade in the works will arrive in 2026 and not via an iOS 26 update later in 202, as some speculated.
The company’s senior vice presidents—engineering chief Craig Federighi and marketing boss Grog Joswiak—have confirmed Siri’s 2026 release date in a YouTube interview with Tom’s Guide editor-in-chief Mark Spoonauer and TechRadar editor-at-large Lance Ulanoff and an earlier interview with YouTuber iJusting.
In one of the segments, the executives finally resolved the ambiguity of the company’y March statement, which said an AI-infused version of the Siri assistant was being delayed with the promise of rolling it out “in the coming year.”
When Spoonauer asked Craig to clarify the timeframe, he went on to explain what happened with Siri instead of answering the question. When pressed again, his colleague Greg jumped in, confirming 2026 is an actual release date for an AI Siri.
Apple confirms AI Siri is coming in 2026 instead of 2025
“So instead of an actual release date, is it okay to say 2026?” Spoonauer asked, to which Joswiak responded by saying, “That’s what we said, yeah.”
An AI-infused version of Siri was heavily promoted during last year’s WWDC and in the initial iPhone 16 ads, but Apple was showing us basically technology demos as none of those features were ready or worked well at the time. They are also not ready as we speak, and won’t be for at least nine more months, if not more. I don’t think we’ll see this Siri update before iOS 26.3 or iOS 26.4 in the spring of 2026.
The Siri debacle resulted in multiple class action lawsuits filed against Apple in the United States and Canada over misleading advertising. Apple barely mentioned Siri during the WWDC25 keynote. And for the first time since 2015, Apple declined a request to have its executives appear on The Talk Show with John Gruber during the WWDC week, likely because of his unusually critical piece titled “Something Is Rotten in the State of Cupertino.”
When an AI-improved version of Siri finally arrives, it will be able to tap into your personal data like emails, chats, calendars and more to answer contextually relevant questions such as “When’s Mom’s flight arriving?” The assistant will also be able to perform complex tasks by chaining together multiple actions across apps.
Apple Intelligence in the Shortcuts app
To that end, Apple did some plumbing work in iOS 26 by adding support for Apple Intelligence models and AI actions to the Shortcuts app. As we noted in our WWDC26 roundup, the Shortcuts app on iOS 267, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26 brings dedicated actions for the Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Image Playground, as well as other new AI-powered actions.

You can also feed Apple Intelligence or ChatGPT responses as input to your shortcut. For instance, a student can use Apple Intelligence in a shortcut to compare an audio transcription of a class lecture to the notes they took, automatically adding any missed key points. Apple Intelligence even suggests actions you may want to use based on your emails, websites, notes and other content.
