Apple didn’t announce live translation for AirPods and captive Wi-Fi syncing, but these iOS 26 features are coming later

Apple didn’t announce AirPods live translation and captive Wi-Fi syncing, but these iOS 26 features should arrive in the coming months, according to a new report.

Apple has obviously learned its lesson about previewing iOS features way in advance, so it didn’t preannounce any iOS 26 features during the WWDC25 keynote that won’t be ready for prime time when the software update is released in the fall.

But that doesn’t mean there are no unannounced features; live translation for AirPods and syncing of captive Wi-Fi connections across Apple devices are both reportedly scheduled to arrive later in 2025, likely as part of iOS 26.1 or iOS 26.2.

iOS 26: AirPods live translation and captive Wi-Fi syncing coming later in 2025

“At WWDC, Apple was careful not to announce anything that wasn’t close to shipping (either in the first version of iOS 26 or an update soon after),” Mark Gurman wrote on Bloomberg. “The company didn’t want to risk repeating WWDC 2024, where it announced several features — including some tentpole technology — that were ultimately delayed by months or have yet to arrive.”

Gurman says Apple could add the features to iOS 26.0 at any point during the beta phase, or release them via iOS 26.1 in October or iOS 26.2 in December.

He previously called for a live translation feature on the AirPods as part of iOS 26. This will let the phone capture the speech, with real-time translation played through your earbuds. Conversely, the iPhone would play a translated response through the loudspeaker for the other person to hear. Google’s Pixel Buds have offered a similar feature since 2017, and Apple should close the gap later this year.

The same author reported ahead of the WWDC25 that iOS 26 would sync captive Wi-Fi network connections across devices in the Apple ecosystem, so you won’t need to fill out web forms on captive portals each time you’d like to connect to the same network on another device.

Captive Wi-Fi networks usually put up a web page to authorize access, and are typically found in gyms, hotels, and office buildings. Apple’s support page has detailed information on using captive Wi-Fi networks on the iPhone or iPad.
