Rumor: iPhone 18 Pro will debut under-screen Face ID with camera hole design

Apple will reportedly debut under-display Face ID technology and a camera hole display design with the iPhone 18 Pro models that are coming in two years.
The Information says Apple is planning new styles for its smartphone, with the iPhone Pro models coming in 2027 allegedly said to sport under-display Face ID.
If true, these phones might file as the first iPhones sporting a true edge-to-edge display without a cutout in the OLED panel at the top for the front-facing FaceTime camera and the TrueDepth camera system used for Face ID. According to the report, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will move the Face ID components under the display, sans the iPhone’s front-facing FaceTime camera.
Rumor: iPhone 18 Pro will have under-screen Face ID with a camera hole
Under-screen cameras are nothing new, but their performance has been disappointing so far, so it’s not surprising these phones will lack an under-display selfie camera. Instead, there will be a small pinhole remaining for the front camera in the top-left corner of the display, like we saw with many Android handsets.
The report doesn’t make it clear whether under-display Face ID means the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could lose the the Dynamic Island feature because there will no longer be a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display.
Research firm Omdia said earlier that under-display Face ID would debut on the iPhone 18 Pros. However, reputable industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was actually first to predict such a feature back in 2021 (although got timeframes wrong).
iPhone Pros in the fall, standard models in the spring
The report focuses on Apple’s plan to reinvigorate the iPhone lineup amid increasing smartphone competition, especially from China, by switching the main iPhone lineup to a biannual release strategy instead of annual updates every September. According to the publication, this will start with the 2026 lineup; the iPhone Pros, iPhone Air and foldable iPhone will be reportedly refreshed in the fall, but the standard iPhones and the “e” models will apparently arrive in the spring instead.
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo backed the report in his latest analysis, saying Apple’s new marketing strategy will enable the company to compete better with Android makers that mostly release new handsets in the first half of the year.
