PlayStation 5 owners can now buy games and other content in the PlayStation Store with Apple Pay on their iPhone as an additional payment method.

Apple Pay joins the existing payment methods on the PlayStation Store—credit cards, debit cards and PayPal—meaning you’re not required to use it if you don’t want to. Like with other payment methods, your PlayStation Store country must be the same as the country where your card registered with Apple Pay has been issued.

To use Apple Pay to buy PS5 titles, open the PlayStation Store on your console and choose any game or paid content you want, then select a Pay with Apple Pay button. You’ll see a special QR code pop up. Pull out your iPhone and scan the code displayed on your TV screen with the built-in Camera app.

You will then see a native checkout sheet on your iPhone or iPad where you can choose a specific Apple Pay card, then confirm the transaction with Face ID, Touch ID or device passcode to complete the purchase. Apple Card users will earn 2% Daily Cash for the money spent on PS5 games.

9to5Mac, which caught wind of the change, speculates that Apple Pay may expand to the PlayStation 4 consoles in a future software update.

This feature takes advantage of a system Apple introduced alongside iOS 18 to support QR code-style payments in other browsers, like Google’s Chrome, Mozilla’s Firefox and others, including on Windows PCs. Before this change, Apple Pay on Macs used to be limited to the Safari browser.

People using these browsers may see an Apple Pay button at checkout. Clicking the button displays a QR code to scan with their iPhone, then authorizes the transaction with Face ID to finish the web payment.

Other Apple-Sony initiatives

Apple has partnered with Sony on other initiatives regarding the PlayStation. For example, PlayStation 5 owners can download the Apple TV and Apple Music apps to listen to music and stream Apple original movies and TV shows on the console. And every now and then, PlayStation owners are treated to limited-time extended trials for Apple TV+ and Apple Music. In addition to that, Apple natively supports Sony controllers on the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.

In addition, PlayStation 5 owners can alsotake advantage of passkeys, a passwordless authentication method that Apple supports across its platforms.
