Microsoft ad uses an older MacBook Air for comparison: “We’re faster than a Mac”

Microsoft’s ad compares an older, previous-generation MacBook Air to the latest Windows PCs with Copilot+ branding to justify the tagline.
The advertisement says the flagship Copilot+ PCs are up to 58% faster than Apple’s previous-generation MacBook Air with the M3 chip, which was released in March 2024. The 13-second video published as a YouTube Short uses Cinebench multi-core CPU benchmarks from May 2024 to back the claim.
The landing page frames Copilot+ PCs as “the most performant Windows PCs ever built, now with more AI features that empower you every day.”

The page also cites Cinebench benchmarks for the latest M4-based MacBook Air to say that Copilot+ PCs deliver up to 13 percent faster performance than the M4 MacBook Air. The fine print states performance claims are based on “Microsoft-commissioned testing conducted by Principled Technologies,” which used Cinebench to measure multi-core benchmark.
The Windows maker does not mention single-core benchmarks where Apple silicon has a significant edge. Single-core performance is also what matters the most when you use everyday apps.
It also states that Copilot+ PCs enjoy up to 47 percent faster AI performance than the previous-generation MacBook Air with the M3 chip, saying these PCs provide “unmatched AI experiences in the market.” Microsoft was smart not to compare against the AI performance on the M4-based MacBook Air.
Copilot+ PCs have a dedicated neural processing unit for speeding up AI and machine learning tasks which is capable of performing more than 40 trillion operations per second. In comparison, the Neural Engine (which servers the same purpose) in Apple’s M4 chips is rated at 38 trillion operations per second, or double the performance of the M3’s Neural Engine that the ad cites.
Another page with further details compares top-rated Copilot+ PCs and Apple’s MacBook Air with the M2 chip, which was released in June 2022. It also provides silicon performance claims by specific processors (AMD, Intel, Qualcomm), for those interested in nitty-gritty details.
