Your iPhone could last longer between charges thanks to an upcoming new feature in iOS 19 that could use Apple Intelligence to conserve battery.

Mark Gurman reports on Bloomberg that this new Apple Intelligence feature in iOS 19 was designed for the upcoming ultra-thin iPhone 17 model, which will have a much smaller battery with shorter run time than other models. However, other Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhones will be able to use it as well.

“The company is planning an AI-powered battery management mode for iOS 19, an iPhone software update due in September, according to people with knowledge of the matter,” read the report. “The enhancement will analyze how a person uses their device and make adjustments to conserve energy, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the service hasn’t been announced.”

iOS 19 could tap AI to conserve the iPhone’s battery

Apple already has massive troves of data collected from the hundreds of millions of devices in the wild to train this algorithm.

“To create the technology, the company is using battery data it has collected from users’ devices to understand trends and make predictions for when it should lower the power draw of certain applications or features,” Gurman has learned.

Another related feature should be a new indicator on the Lock Screen showing an estimate of how long it will take to charge up the device. The author doesn’t explain whether this will be an entirely new feature or an improved version of the existing Optimized Battery Charging toggle in Settings > Battery.

Apple says the feature uses “on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimized Battery Charging activates only when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time,” which sounds like Apple is already using AI to help address the iPhone’s battery life. However, this feature is designed to address battery health. “The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged,” Apple specifies.

iOS 19 should be less glitchy

Gurman said earlier that iOS 19 will make it easier to use captive Wi-Fi networks commonly found in gyms, hotels and office buildings. iOS 19 will synchronize access details across devices, so you will only need to log in via the web browser on one device and all your others will automatically connect.

iOS 19 could should be more stable than earlier releases. “Besides the AI additions and interface changes, Apple is pushing engineers to ensure that this year’s releases are more functional and less glitchy,” Gurman has it. In fact, given the glitcheness and buginess of Apple’s software over the past several years, Apple would be wise to pause on innovation and get its software development in order.

Apple will preview iOS 19 and other major updates on June 9 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, ahead of their public releases in the fall.
