The Vision Pro headset will allegedly support scrolling in apps with your eyes when Apple releases its new visionOS 3 operating system this fall.

Mark Gurman reported today on Bloomberg that eye scrolling will work in all built-in apps on the Vision Pro. However, third-party developers will also be able to incorporate eye-scrolling functionality in their own software.

The feature will require visionOS 3, which will be previewed at Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference in June and released to the public in the fall.

Rumor: visionOS 3 will bring eye scrolling to the Vision Pro

To be sure, eye scrolling won’t require new hardware and will work on the existing headset. “The idea is to leverage the Vision Pro’s existing eye-tracking hardware and software to take the system a step further, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the technology is still under wraps,” Gurman writes.

Samsung already has an eye-scrolling feature on its Galaxy phones, but it hasn’t caught on with consumers because it isn’t very reliable. Called Smart Scroll, the feature takes advantage of the front-facing camera to detect when you’re looking at the device. The iPhone doesn’t support scrolling with eyes even though it uses Apple’s TrueDepth camera to sense depth.

On the Vision Pro, eye tracking is the primary navigation method. It works flawlessly, according to reviews, leveraging LEDs and infrared cameras that project invisible light patterns onto each eye, allowing for ultraprecise input. You just look at an onscreen object to instantly select it. It also powers another feature, called Optic ID, for secure authentication based on the uniqueness of each person’s iris.

Eye tracking comes to the iPhone

Last year, Apple brought eye tracking to the iPhone with the iOS 17 update, mainly designed for people with disabilities. The feature uses the TrueDepth camera to let you move an onscreen pointer around and select things, but you cannot scroll content in apps with your eyes.

Gurman reiterated that the Cupertino tech giant is also developing a lighter, more affordable Vision Pro, another one that tethers to a Mac for minimal lag, and two smart glasses, one without augmented reality and the other with it. The AR model is still in early stages of development and will take several years to mature.
