The OLED display panel that Apple plans to utilize on the 20th anniversary iPhone launching in 2027 could wrap around all sides, including the top and bottom edges.

Apple is allegedly working on two major iPhone updates to celebrate the handset’s 20th anniversary in 2027. One is apparently its first foldable device featuring a nearly invisible display crease and the other is said to be a redesigned iPhone made mostly from glass, featuring a true fullscreen appearance with no notch.

ETNews reported today that the device will incorporate a bezel-less screen that curves around all four edges of the device, not just the left and right side like Samsung’s Galaxy Edge. To that end, the company is said to partner with OLED suppliers Samsung Display and LG Display on creating a wraparound display.

One of the more interesting stories from Apple lore concerns an all-glass iPhone. Steve Jobs and Jony Ive apparently dreamed up a smartphone with no buttons, ports or any other distractions, made entirely of glass. At the time, the idea seemed preposterous and impossible to pull off.

The advent of wraparound screens, mainstreamed by Samsung’s Galaxy Edge smartphones, gave credence to these rumors. As it stands, Apple might be able to actually realize its dream iPhone thanks to the latest advancements in wraparound OLED panels and the rumored sub-display Face ID technology.

However, Apple would need to place the speakers under the display as well. The Information recently said that one of the 2027 iPhones will sport a truly edge-to-edge display, with only a small pinhole for the front camera in the display. Apple would also need to put the selfie camera under the display to create a true fullscreen iPhone with no visual distractions.

Under-panel cameras already exist, but they’re not as good as standard selfie cameras; maybe Apple has achieved a breakthrough in this space? The Elec reported in April 2024 that Apple supplier LG Innotek was developing under-panel camera technology without a visible hole in the display when not in use, using a freeform optic multiple lens system to achieve this engineering feat.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the sophistication of the 20th anniversary iPhone’s design makes it “extraordinarily complex” to manufacture because brand new parts and production techniques are required.
