YouTube’s new AI music tool makes free background audio for your videos

YouTube’s new AI tool, dubbed “Music assistant,” can generate instrumental tracks to use as copyright-free background audio for your video projects.

TechCrunch spotted a video, published on Google’s Creator Insider channel earlier this week, demonstrating the new tool for creators. The feature is currently rolling out to YouTube users with access to Creator Music, which is Google’s catalog of music that can be used in YouTube videos without losing monetization.

If you need an engaging track to accompany a fitness-focused video you recorded earlier, you can give YouTube a prompt such as “give me uplifting and motivational music for a workout montage” instead of searching online audio repositories.

YouTube’s AI music assistant can create free music for videos without worrying about copyright claims

Music assistant will create several tracks based on your prompt. You can then review them, refine your prompt or download audio to use in your YouTube video projects. If you have Creator Music (currently in beta), sign in to YouTube Studio in a web browser at studio.youtube.com, click the left menu and select “Creator Music.”

You should see a “Music Assistant” tab in Creator Music if you have this feature. Otherwise, check back later. Creator Music is available to creators in the United States who participate in the YouTube Partner Program.

Select the “Music Assistant” tab to enter your prompt or choose from suggested prompts to get you started. You can be specific in your request in terms of instruments and mood. It also helps to describe the type of video you’re making.

Many other AI companies offer similar services to create royalty-free music from prompts.. For example, Meta’s open-source AudioCraft and MusicGen models can generate sounds and media from simple descriptions.

Google experimenting with generative AI on YouTube

Video creators always worry about licensing issues that often result in copyright strikes, which in turn could lead to account termination. YouTube is particularly unforgiving when it comes to copyright claims. Thankfully, Google’s YouTube Studio offers royalty-free production music and sound effects for use in your videos.

You can also browse specialized websites that offer royalty-free audio libraries. But as YouTube’s new tool is capable of generating original audio from a simple prompt, for free, it could eventually render some of those websites obsolete.

Google previously brought several AI features to YouTube. Its free online music remixer, dubbed YouTube DJ, lets you make beats and mashups of YouTube videos to add to your Shorts. And Google’s DeepMind provides a feature called Dream Track that lets you hum songs to turn them into music tracks in the style of a famous artist. The company will eventually integrate that feature into Creator Music, too.

Don’t confuse Dream Track with a similar feature to identify a song by humming or singing on the mobile Google app, YouTube Music and its iOS and Android widget.
