YouTube is testing AI-powered overviews in video searches
Google is testing new AI-powered overviews in YouTube search results, which highlight clips from videos that may be relevant to your query.
The company announced the latest YouTube test in a YouTube Help page published on April 23, 2025. The feature is currently available to a small number of YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States. Based on user feedback, the company may decide to roll out AI overviews to all YouTube users worldwide.
The feature uses AI to“highlight clips from videos that will be most helpful for your search query, providing another way to discover content when searching on YouTube as well as discover topics and information related to your search query,” said Google.
YouTube is testing AI overviews in search results
If you’re included in this test, you may see a new video results carousel pop up after entering certain search queries. Unfortunately, you’ll have to try different queries because AI overviews are currently restricted to some English search queries.
Google says the feature is most likely to show for product and shopping searches like “best noise-cancelling headphones,” as well as those related to locations or things to do in those locations, like“museums to visit in San Francisco”.
If you have the feature, you can help improve the algorithm by hitting the 3-dotted menu and selecting either a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. AI video summaries and hiding end screens
One of the experimental features that’s still in testing is video summaries that use generative AI to create a short, basic summary of a YouTube video, giving viewers a quick glimpse of what to expect. Google began testing this feature in August 2023 with a small number of YouTube users and select English-language videos. A year later, AI-generated summaries expanded to a broader global audience, but they’re still not widely available to all YouTube users.
Another AI-powered experiment summarizes comments in a video’s comments section. A recent test lets some people hide the annoying end screens by hitting a “Hide” button in the video’s top-right corner on mobile and desktop.
A better notifications experience
Another one aims to improve your notifications experience when you set channel notifications to “All” but don’t engage with the channel. Many people turn off all notifications from the YouTube app when they get inundated with notifications from channels they follow.
“It’s common for users to have turned on All notifications for a channel, only to have turned off app-level notifications,” Google says. This test prevents channels you haven’t recently engaged with from sending you push notifications, but you can still review them in the notification inbox on the YouTube app.
“When viewers turn off all notifications from YouTube, all creators are unable to reach even their most engaged viewers outside the app,” it explains. “The goal of this experiment is to help us find ways to reduce this problem.”
