Rumor: Apple readying “bold” iPhone Pro redesign for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary
Apple will reportedly celebrate the 20th anniversary of its smartphone with a “bold” new iPhone Pro redesign, which should join the iPhone 19 Pro lineup in 2027.
Mark Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that the Cupertino company is preparing a major shake-up for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, which reportedly includes a foldable iPhone and a bold new Pro model that makes more extensive use of glass.” No other information was provided.
The way I read the report, there will be a completely new iPhone Pro model joining the mix. This model will likely come in addition to the iPhone 19 Pro and iPhone 19 Pro Max models, which should retain the current design.
Will there be a redesign for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary?
Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive is said to have always wanted to create an iPhone made entirely of a single piece of glass, but Gurman doesn’t say whether the 20th anniversary redesign might feature an all-glass look from Ive’s dreams.
Apple could also bring a new ultra-thin model with a revamped appearance as a replacement for the iPhone Plus model in the 2025 lineup. In other words, the so-called “iPhone Thin” is expected to visually revitalize the standard lineup, while the “bold” new iPhone Pro should do the same for the Pro lineup in 2027.
Looks matter: an evolution of the iPhone’s design
The last significant redesign of the Apple smartphone happened with the release of the iPhone X back in 2017. The iPhone X ditched the iconic Home button with Touch ID and adopted a fullscreen appearance with the infamous notch for Face ID sensors that later morphed into the Dynamic Island.
The iPhone X design was reused for the subsequent iPhone XS and iPhone 11 series. In 2020, the iPhone 12 brought design tweaks such as square instead of rounded corners, thinner borders and more. The iPhone 12’s design was carried over with minor visual changes to the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 lineups.
We’ve been stuck with the current look for years now. In the early days, each iPhone had a distinct look. But starting with the iPhone 4 series in 2010, Apple began reusing the current design for much longer. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s looked almost unchanged, as did the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. Similarly, the iPhone 6 design was reused for the subsequent iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 series.
One of the first questions that pops into my mind after seeing a new iPhone that looks more or less the same as the previous one (save for some new colors) is: “How will people know that I’ve upgraded?” It’s not snobbism; we are primarily visual beings, and smartphones are an extension of ourselves. It’s only natural that we want others to see we have a shiny new thing in our pockets; it’s human nature.
